Ongoing hip-joint pain. At night, pain can be piercing when turning from side-to-side. Seems associated with lower-back pain & UT infection.

Was diagnosed with kidney stones last Thanksgiving but have passed them. Not certain that such an issue could contribute to this pain in particular.

Hi Rev's,

Have you spoken to your GP about this?

There are a number of possibilities that could explain it but I'm not so sure kidney stones would be related, it could be arthritic in origin if it's presenting in the joint. I've just been referred for blood tests to check for arthritis for my joint pain, but they're also going to check for vitamins D & B12 too as apparently deficiencies can cause bone and joint pain. These vitamins need the sun so prob wouldn't be an issue for you if you live in a sunny area, I live in Newcastle UK where we don't get a great deal of quality sunlight

'Peircing' pain is often associated with nerve pain, is the sensation only in your hip joint or does it travel - for example, my nerves are irritates by disc problems and I feel a 'white hot searing pain that travels from my left buttock to my big toe...

I would definitely recommend a trip to your GP so you can discuss this in more detail and arrange any necessary treatments, good luck!!

Dear Mistee, Thank you so much for this insight. I am in Chicago and this winter was rough. I saw my gp, told him and had x-rays of my hips and there was nothing showing. The pain is red-hot at times and seems that I can go for a period of time without any pain or much pain at all. I can look at my last blood profile and see if I had any deficiencies and investigate there. Thank you again!

Hi Rev

Sorry to hear you are suffering. I have different arthritic conditions and have moderate osteo arthritis in my hips. I often have the same sensation when turning over in bed or doing certain movements just like a knife or a red hot needle being pushed into and from my hip. I would certainly go and have a word with your doctor about this. Hope you can find a solution soonx

Dear Rosewine, Would this (osteo arthritis) show up on x-rays? They x-rayed mine and all appeared clear. How was your diagnosed, please?

Sorry I couldn't reply before as we had to go to a funeral yesterday. Yes mine was diagnosed through an Xray after months of continous pain that was getting worse. All I can say if the pain is like this with moderate osteoarthritis in hip I would hate to have severe. For many years I had periods of hip pain but they would then clear up but this time it is ongoing and after early morning stiffness seems to ease and then the more I walk or do the worse I get. I've tried surrounding myself with pillows at night to try and keep me in one place and it does seem to help to lie in bed with a pillow between my knees. I also suffer with low back pain.

Sorry to hear of the funeral. I must do a follow up with my dr . . . It doesn't sound like it is going to be arthritis, and, it has eased up a little the last 24-hours. I am leaning toward bladder infection or kidney stone but will let the dr determine. Many, many thanks!
