I wonder if anyone else has daughters who have the faulty ovarian/breast cancer gene. 50% risk of OV cancer and 85% risk of breast cancer.
I was diagnosed before I had the genetic testing even though I kept pesterring for a cancer prevention hysterectomy.
Yes I have a daughter who has tested positive for BRCA 1 gene and she has had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy at 26 and will have PGD treatment when she tries for a baby to ensure the gene is not passed on to her children. She will then probably have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed after finishing her family. I also have another daughter who is being tested and waiting for results.
Hi Tina & Charon, my daughter is only 17 so has not yet been tested to see if she has inherited BRCA2 from me. However I have a niece who has inherited. Charon - please can you give more info on what PGD is - I have not heard of this before.
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) involves the use of assisted reproductive technology (ivf type treatment). The aim is to obtain and fertilise a number of eggs. Once fertilised, the embryos develop for three days and then one or two cells are removed from each embryo. The genetic material (DNA or chromosomes) within each cell is then tested for the BRCA gene abnormality. If they find an unaffected embryo this is transferred to the uterus with the hope that it will implant and form a pregnancy. If successful, the baby should not be affected by the BRCA gene mutation.
It is a lengthy process and couples need permission for the Genetics Commission and their local health authority.

Surely the positive in all this is, you can keep an eye on her now and get it monitored and make sure she knows all her children know about it too (boys and girls). At least she has a warning beacon.

Ok Lizzie, yes we had your attitude before the testing however, Amy will not be offered MRI on her breasts until the age of 30 and because ovarion cancer cannot always be detected by ultra sound screening until it is an advanced cancer, this won`t be an option. The only option is hysterectomy after she has finished having her family. So you see, for now there is NOTHING we can really do. Amy would not have the PGD because she has a 5 month old daughter who never had that chance, she feels it would be unfare to give that option to another child, She says its almost like saying "well, it doesn`t matter about you, but we will safe guard the next child". We haven`t talked about mastectomy as yet and ofcourse it has to be her choice even though this is the route I would personally take. I have actually been turned down the surgery until I get the 5 yr all clear from the OV cancer.
Bosue, Yes your grandaughter can be tested when she is older but they don`t usually consider this until early 20`s, Amy`s daughter will be tested as soon as she is able too. She is only 5 months old now.

Thanks for the info. I am sorry, I did not realize but can now understand how concerned you are that even knowing she is at risk may not be enough to prevent it without very drastic action.
