Hello everyone,

Have any of you ladies ever had surgery to remove your tumour at a later date when it has recurred? my specialist nurse said sometimes this is possible, any where in the area that the tumours came come back as long as they are small enough, anyone had any surgery near the lungs or liver?

I did have a second surgery a year after having hysterectomy, deulking etc. as it had recurred in peritonean (cant spell it) and some growth on bowel, then chemo. So dont know if that is the same as you or not.dont know how much help that is to you.Love Sue x

Hi Sarah

My recurrence was on the Para-aortic gland very near major blood vessels and arteries I asked about an operation my oncologist said it was too dangerous and of no benefit to me, I had second line palliative chemo carb/taxol to attempt to shrink it he said it wouldn't go away and that I had about one year to live,

went for results of my scan in January Great news as the tumour has gone he did stress that it will come back I then asked if it would be in the same place he said there was no way of knowing so I am now in remission again, after being told that it woudn't go away it is brilliant news one day at a time.

Try not to stress too much about what is to come ( easier said than done )

the unexpected happens we can't second guess anything....don't forget to write all your questions down before you see your oncologist, I had to run down the corridor after my onc to ask about an operation.

Best Wishes xxGwyneth xx

Hi Sarah,

Sorry to hear about the new problems. I have a tumour near my liver and that is inoperable. In the Dr's language - to operate in that area could open up a can of worms. There are evidently so many blood vessels in the area where my tumour is, it could be dangerous. On the other hand I have a friend who had liver cancer and had the tumour removed completely. I think it just depends where it is situated. It has however been controlled by chemotherapy.

I also had secondary lung cancer, this was put into remission with chemotherapy.

Try not to worry, I know that is easier said than done. When do you see you specialist again?

Love Anna xx

Sarah,

This may not be the same as you but my Mum had her 1st surgery Feb 2011, after the surgery to remove, womb, ovaries, tubes, peritoneal, we were told there was a growth in the upper left quadrant that could not be removed. Mum had chemo in the hope it would shrink, after various chemo's and problems with reactions and scans showed the chemo was not working they stopped and said they would apply to the pct for a another drug and to come back in 8 weeks. After only 5 weeks she ended up in hospital with a complete bowel obstruction, she was told it was in-operable, then out of the blue a Dr Brendan Moran said he was willing to give it a go. After a 5 hour operation they removed the tumor, she now has an ileostomy but at least he was willing to give her a chance. Her quality of life is better now as at least she can eat and drink. I asked the registrar why in her first op it was not removed and why we were told it was in-operable and was told that it was because Dr Moran is a world expert and this was his field of expertise. Without this op Mum would not be here now of that I am sure. What I am trying to get at here is that there are some surgeons that will say no to operating and others that feel confident to operate.

I know everyone is different and not all hospitals have world experts on there team, but just because one says no to operating that does not mean that others will say the same.

I wish you all the best, this mail may not be of any help, but you never know or it may be of help to someone else. Mum is coming up to 73 in April, so age did not go against her either.

Sue

Dear Sarah

I had a second op last December for a tumour inside the pelvic area between thevvault of the vagina and the anterior wall of the rectum. Hence the colostomy! The girl in the next bed was also having a second tumou removed from behind the spleen. She ended up with an ileostomy. My gynae told me it is not common to operate more than once for OC, it all depends on location and risk. When mine recurs it will be back to chemo but I will have the option of radio therapy as this time they got the whole tumour and decided to keep radio in reserve as it can only be used once. At present I feel great enjoying quality time in Devon with my toyboys! I spent Friday at the beach after picking up the youngest from school and I saw Wrath of the Titans in 3D in Paignton yesterday! Highly inaccurate view of Greek mythology but all good fun. I had forgotten how awful that bIt of Paignton is! Today they have a birthday party and their parents are decorating so I may seek some peace at Colton Fishacre or Greenacres. Life goes on and continues to be good! The end comes for everyone eventually so there is no more reason for me to dwell on it than anyone who does not have OC. Anna is my inspiration!

Ps! My recurrent tumour was quite big! 7cm x 4cm I think &pear shaped! I saw it on the scan! I think I would refuse more surgery though, even if offered it!

Hi Sarah

I was to have surgery to remove a tumour at the top of my vagina and other small ones in the same area. It was major but the surgeon at the Marsden was prepared to do it. Unfortunately have a tumour appeared in my lung so operation cancelled and trying chemo to shrink before reconsidering the op again. So obviously possible but mine were in the pelvis not abdomen. Good luck with it all. Hetty x
