Chemo and Flying short haul

I need some advice. I have advanced OC and was diagnosed with recurrence in April 2023 starting carboplatin and calyx last week. I have a city break planned flight is for one hour but we travel one week exactly after my next chemo session. I would love to go but am I being unrealistic ?

Hiya. You are definitely not being unrealistic! I'm on my 3rd recurrence and I'm on weekly taxol, I've flown to Tenerife a few times. I always ask my oncologist if it's ok and I do get travel insurance. You can't miss out on something that will make you feel good. Enjoy xx

Please ask your onc and CNS . If out of UK city break, you may find travel insurance costs more than holiday and you would probably not be wise to travel without insurance. If you don’t tell insurance company you are on chemo, you will void your insurance. Good luck whatever you decide! Emma x

I went on a 6 day break to Morzine in the Alps last September in between rounds of carbo/caelyx. Checked with my oncologist first and took insurance with ‘Insure with’. It cost £70. In a few weeks I am going to Sicily using the same insurer but because I have since had low platelets (just once) the cost for a week is £120. Go for a holiday it will lift your spirits! Katy

How did you feel one week after your last chemo? Only you can know if you're up to it but my advice would be to go for it if you can! I second the travel insurance advice and would recommend Insurancewith. I would also wear a mask when travelling as you'll be in your low immunity week, and just be realistic and kind to yourself - if queuing/flying/waiting around at the airport tires you out, have a nice relaxing day the next day and don't expect to rush around the city all day every day! I hope you have a fabulous break if you do decide to go 😊

I felt fine and traveled a week after carbo/caelyx. I did have to have my blood checked at two and three weeks after chemo but if you’re only going for a week it should be fine.

I went to Lanzarote whilst on that cocktail, I was insured with INSUREWITH & it cost about £60. Ask you oncologist or speak to CNS. Mine were happy for me to go & it was good for me. Just remember to wear plenty of 50+ factor & keep out of midday sun. Wishing you all the best xx

I went to Kauai from California 5 hour flight for 9 days ........we left 5 days after 2nd round. other than being tired no issues and just enjoying the island was amazing if your onc will approve go for it. That was in 2021 my second reoccurrence I a now on my 4th reoccurrence and not expected to survive as they have exhausted all avenues. We traveled extensively in 2022 Galapagos Sicily Ireland Portugal and the Christmas markets from Amsterdam to Basal and then Hawaii and am so glad we did my husband and I have made some amazing memories . I am so glad we did as I will not live to see the summer this year.

Travel as much as you can this is a debilitating disease.
