Hi there, my mum has had 2 infusions of Avastin and although seems to be tolerating it well she has developed a really sore mouth and eating is really painful. Can anyone recommend anything to help and does this settle down as the treatment progresses? Thanks in advance for any advice. Ashleigh x
Avastin Sore Mouth: Hi there, my mum has had... - My Ovacome
Avastin Sore Mouth
Hiya, your poor mum. I know from experience with different chemo combinations how painful and delineating this can be. Here is what has helped me.Ambesol liquid. Stings but eases the pain enough to eat.
Difflam mouthwash. Helps clear them up. Can be bought over the counter at a pharmacy but mums oncologist or GP may give on prescription.
Buccal hydrocortisone tablets. Only available on prescription but not all medics know of it. One of my oncologists had to consult her drugs directory and the hospital pharmacist. Clears them up much quicker than anything else.
Hope this information helps and mum gets some relief soon.

p.s. sorry if this reply or a similar one appears twice I’m not always good with technology!🤷♀️
Hello Ashleigh,
Thank you very much for your message. I am so sorry to hear that your mum is experiencing such a sore mouth at the moment. I can see that you have already had a very supportive response from Jan and I’m sure that other members of the forum community will be along soon to share their experiences.
Has your mum been able to contact her clinical team about this? I would encourage her to contact them as soon as possible, as they will be able to identify what is causing the pain and offer her advice about how to manage this. Your mum should have been given the contact details of the 24/7 chemotherapy helpline for advice about symptoms and side effects.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if we can help with any further information. You can contact us by calling 0800 008 7054 or by emailing support@ovacome.org.uk. I do hope that your mum’s pain resolves soon.
Best wishes,

Hi Cathryn, thank you for your message. My mum spoke to one of her clinical team today and they also advised to try Difflam. It already seems to be helping. Thanks again for your support, this is a fabulous forum, it has helped me immensely in coming to terms with and understanding my mums illness. Ashleigh

Hi. I also had a sore mouth after 2 Avastin with chemo. The meds and mouthwash suggested should help. I'm assuming you Mum is already using a baby toothbrush? And I used Aloevera toothpaste. I wanted to let you know I'm still on Avastin a few months on and have had no further problems(it got better in about a week).Best wishes to you both.
I did suffer with a sore mouth on Avastin a developed a thing called 'Geographic tongue' eating was very painful and had to become selective in what I ate. Mouth hygiene is so important so a very soft toothbrush and I also would gently brush my tongue. I was able to get relief from a listermint light mouthwash rather than full strength one. Your team will be able to prescribe a mouthwash depending on how severe it is.If she can't tolerate the tooth brushing a minimum of mouthwashing . My home remedy was sucking on homemade ice lollies. I just used a pour in water to an ice Lolly shaper.
Maybe contact team for advice particularly as Mum isn't able to each much.
