Have been given magmesium tablets by gp as well as having infusions at hospital due to it falling really low after 2 weeks 4.8 . Am çonfused as gp says 3x a day but hospital have said no. My oncologist cant prescribe tablets and the satchets make me sick and it was her sugestion to ask gp. When I took satchets it would be right through puking far too much to continue. What/how do you take them

Magnesium tablets
Do you know why the hospital said no to 3 tablets/day? It is best to spread the dose for better absorption.
The amount of magnesium per day depends on the type of magnesium that you are taking as well as the deficiency/blood levels.
There are some magnesium salts that are poorly absorbed such as magnesium oxide and magnesium gluconate.
Too much of magnesium citrate will cause you diarrhoea.
I have had the infusion before and it didn't do much to improve the levels.
I personally prefer magnesium glycinate or bisglycinate. Once your levels are topped up, you'd need 400 mg/day as maintenance.
I have Neomag chewable Magnesium Glycerophosphate. My oncologist says 2 per day. I have iv magnesium twice a week. I don’t take a tablet on the day of the infusion but , when the cramps start, I take 8 - 10 tablets. I have blood tests at least every 2 weeks and my magnesium levels are never above 0.4. Guess it depends on your blood tests how much would be safe. If you are having iv infusions I would think your levels are quite low.
Hi Tezza66
Similar to Neona, my magnesium is now permanently low due to the effects of chemo (hovers around 0.5). I was also prescribed Neomag chewable tablets by the hospital and I take 6 a day (2 each at 8hr intervals) and these are now issued by my GP. I've never needed an infusion, so not sure of any possible conflicts between different administration routes.
(By the way, if you do ever take Neomag, I find it best to let them disolve in your mouth with a bit of water then swallow. I really struggled chewing then due to taste/texture.)
Best wishes
Sally
Hi, I take 4 magnesium citrate tablets per day.
I eat avocado a day or two before infusion, it brings Mg levels up to normal level.
You should have a pharmacist connected to your oncology unit that might be able to advise. I was told to stop taking Gaviscon whilst on magnesium supplement. I was marginally low so only had to take for a week.
Good luck.
Based on my nephrologist's recommendation, I take 3 Slow-Mag per day, 1 in the morning and 2 at night. The Slow-Mag is supposed to be easier on your digestion. It works for me and keeps my magnesium levels up. Best wishes to you as you work on this! Deb in Colorado
