Diet with a colostomy

Hi everybody

I was interested to see if anybody had any idea of how to eat a controlled diet with a stoma. [Edited by moderator]

Greens I’m unable to eat with my stoma but I’m thinking maybe I could make a smoothie of some sort to help?

Does anybody have any other advice of what I may be able to eat or drink/not eat or drink, as I have had progression recently and would like very much to slow down all that is happening naturally as well...

Thankyou and I wish everybody well xxx

Stay away from nuts , pips, skins and stalks. Eat little and often and chew everything longer than you normally would. I had a stoma for 2 years and it’s the same kind of diet once it’s reversed, everything in moderation. There are other obvious foods to avoid such as sweet corn and for me it’s mushrooms too.

Had mine for over 3 years now, was initially told to not to have nuts or eat potato skins given a book and sent on my way. Have to admit I tend to eat what I like. You learn how it reacts to things as you go along. Fruit and veg chivvy it along a little quicker and looser, ( though I know some have a far different experience) as do carbonated drinks (especially Prosecco)😁 Definitely chew meat a little longer, The main thing is to keep up your fluid intake, I’m not a water lover, I drink weak squash. I know if I’ve not taken in enough fluid, as I can feel a discomfort in areas of my colon, almost feeling it struggle round and get a little stuck, This is quickly resolved with fluid intake to soften the waste. Everybody’s experience will be different, it really is a case of listening to your body as you go along with a little trial and error. When on chemo beware of constipation and take solutions to assist, after trying all sorts of combinations, Lactose solution suits me best. Good luck

I have an iliostomy. I know everyone is different but I eat anything I want to . However I cut mushrooms up into very small pieces and am wary of sweetcorn and coconut. Also wouldn’t risk popcorn. You may find some good advice on the facebook group Colostomy UK.

Thankyou so much for all of your responses. Most of these I do put into practise as I’ve had a few hospital visits myself concerning this. However I was wondering if anybody had any cancer diet advice such as tumeric and spinach and kale ideas but with somebody with a stoma. I’m unable to eat most greens and Piths seeds nuts etc but I was wondering if anybody partakes in the smoothies and if anybody else has taken red meat out of their diet also?

Am I taking this a step to far or am I not the only one?
