Wonder if anyone can help? I’m expecting to lose my hair with my weekly taxol starting next week. I lost my hair in summer 2017 and wore a mixture of a wig and various “buffs” - sports headwear that can be worn in different ways. Back then my kids and I wanted me to look “normal” on the school run and out and about. Then over the summer hols I wore buffs more but my kids preferred me to wear the wig when they had friends round etc.
This time round I am aware it will be winter and that a wig doesn’t work so well with coat hoods, scarves, woolly hats etc. I am happy to look at non-wig headwear but want my kids to be comfortable with this and equally don’t want to put them in positions where their friends ask them questions that they may not want-they do not have to constantly live in my “cancer world”. Kids are 10 & 12 and I do still do a playground school pick up for one of them and equally both have friends round and I drop them to evening activities. Does anyone have any headwear suggestions or relevant experience that might help?

Hi, I lost my hair over last Winter and wore Seasalt handybands in a scarf effect tucked in/under at the back or woolly hats. I also had a couple of cashmere beanies which I tended to wear indoors and kept 1 for sleeping in as I felt the cold terribly as Winter wore on. Not sure if any of that helps for your social situation though.
I am looking at this sought of stuff myself at the moment. I like the look of the Jon Renau Hat Magic which is like a stretchy halo which you can wear under hats or scarfs. It looks quite comfortable, comes in lots of colors and is not too pricy. I think I would get it trimmed because it would be too long for me.
There is also Hair Accents by Henry Margu which is a hat with hair but a baseball cap is not really my thing.
Both of these are at mimowigs.com which is UK wig online shop.
I invested in a fake fringe last time which I found useful.
By the way You Tube has lots of brilliant informative videos on wigs and other alternative hair.
Hello. I have used the penguin caps for both of my rounds of chemo 6 cycles of Carbo/ taxol. And then 6 round of Carbo/ gemzar. I had great success, and would recommend them .. Never lost my hair, people didn’t even know I had cancer (. You may want to look into it , they can deliver almost over night if needed.
I am in the U.S. but when I started treatment, my sister bought be two hats---one baseball cap and one beachy-like hat (I can take pictures if you'd like) BOTH with hair attached inside the hat so hair hangs down from the hat. I could just put the hat on and it looked like I had quite the head of hair under it. One was curly hair and one straight (my sister has a sense of humor and wanted me to wear the one that matched my mood that day). They really are great and dropping your kids off or even wearing a baseball cap around the house is nothing anyone would question. (She did get them in my color/shade hair). Let me know if you want to see and I happen to be spending the day with my sister today so can ask more if you are interested. Wishing you luck in finding what makes you most comfortable. oxox
Is there anyone in your vacinity that suffers from alopecia they are great at show g you how to tie different scarfs and bandanas that are very stylish I have one near me in Scotland who holds classes. Hope you can solve your problem. If you have a Maggie centre ear you they also do it
Hiya. I went back to work very soon after chemo last year, in September. All through the winter I wore a wig, basically every day at work. Taking public transport, I can relate to your worry about hoods and hats etc on top of a wig, but it really wasn't a problem. You get a touch of 'hat hair' either way ... but I took the scarves/hats/hoods off in the restroom after arriving at the office, and noone was the wiser.
So it was bamboo cap, wig and then scarf/hood on top.
Thank you all for your advice and recommendations. I am now going to do my research and come up with some ideas to present to my kids. I feel much more positive after all your ideas, and a chat with my hairdresser last week. I will chat to the chemo unit nurses later today for some advice from them too. I am considering getting my hair cut shorter ASAP to remove the weight (it is shoulder length now) and starting to wear more hats etc to make the transition easier.
In my typical style I have kept busy this last week instead of addressing this headwear issue when I had more time as I start the weekly taxol this afternoon!
