Hi Lorraine,

There are lots of sprays you can buy over the counter. In U.K. Boots Chemist do one but I'm sure you will find similar in Australia if you ask.

I seem to be really dry on my pain meds so I went for one of my mums old tips. Butter and sugar balls. Only little but rolled to a sweet size and let it melt. Has to be real butter though. It meant I got some sleep

I drink tons of water. Even when I could only take sips, just keep 2 bottles by my bed all the time.

It was so bad when I was first ill, that I thought I must have diabetes, my mouth was so dry.

Like a desert in my mouth, but I could only sip water. Sweets tasted awful, so lozenges were no good. I thin water is the only cure.

Good luck,

Laura

Hi Lorraine. It's Tara from Sydney, Australia. I buy Biotene Dry Mouth wash from any chemist. Its mild and works for me. I also use salt and bicarb soda with 1 drop of tea tree soluble oil to stop gum/mouth infections and mouth ulcers. Sometimes I leave out teatree oil cos it can be too strong, especially on chemo. Yes, and lots of water. Hope it improves soon for you.

Hi Lorraine. I am on the Northern beaches in Sydney near Manly. Which part of the mountains are you? A long time ago I lived in Glenbrook for a while and have good friends in Blackheath and Leura.

What trial drug are you on? How did you go with caelyx? Its been suggested to me with carboplatinum for my 1st recurrence cos I don't want really taxol again but I've read Caelyx has some really bad side effects. Not that taxol is a walk in the park! LOL. Hope all the questions are ok.

I have had a ulcer on tip of my tongue for 4 months now. Don't know why as I am a year past chemo. Tried everything but it won't go! Biotene does helps a bit.

Probably will have to start chemo soon as recurred last November but cancer spot stable so far and not very syptomatic, apart from rapid rising of CA125 over 3 months. I am determined to get to Singapore at end of April. We shall see. Hope everything improves for you soon. Sending hugs.

HI Tara, I love Manly spent most of my youth there with most of Sydney.

I lived in Leana on the Npean river for over 30 years move to Winmalee in a beautiful mountain st on the edge of the national park, turned out to be a mistake we were only there 5 months when the big fire about 4 years ago burnt the street to the ground only 3 houses survived mine was one though badly damaged.

Then not long arfter that I was diagnosed with cancer it's been just over three years

and I was on my 5th line of treatment, my history is as soon as I go of chemo my 125 rises, Carbo/Caelyx was my last treatment, I had 8 rounds one a month and found it very manageable with little side effects, the funny thing I had Caelyx by it.s self as 3 line and had some bad side effects corbo /caelyx together was easier when I asked the prof he said that they are find this to be true,

Caelyx has been the most successful chemo for me I had just finished the Carbo/Caelyx and was to go on a low dose of Caelyx as a maintenance drug when The prof out Westmead hospital, offered my oncologist a chance for this trial drug

she thought it was a good opportunity, the drug is not chemo the idea is it will make cancer more sensitive to chemo it's called Cantrix, and is infused by a IP port, the drug is aimed at recurrence.

I was in the first stage it has never been test and this stage was to find the max amount that could be tolerated.

It has been very hard I think the dose will have to be reduce but this will be decided in the next phase, I've decided not too continue.

I'll take a break give my body a rest and my oncologist will put me back on Carbo.Caelyx then maybe maintenance who knows the 6 weeks of the test drug may help.

I hope the Carbo combo works as well for you as it did for me Take care Lorraine xx๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

Hi Lorraine, sorry to hear this. My mum was on meds to dry up her secretions when she was very poorly, way back in 2004. The specialist nurse recommended pineapple (but check with your Oncologist) and she prescribed an artificial saliva. Sucking ice cubes (or slivers) too & lots of lipsalve (helps psychologically!). Much love & hope it improves soon ๐Ÿ˜˜ xx

Take care Sharon ..Lorraine xx

Hi Lorraine, my trial drug proved not to work on me. It made me ill and lots of pain in my kidney. I have stopped it. I hope you are having more success. I am just going to be me for awhile. It doesnโ€™t have a name. Just BGB-a317 and BGB 290.

Hi Sharon, Sorry to hear that, I know how you feel this drug each dose is worse. I've had 7 each one with bad pain the night of the drug ,the 4th was pain and diarrhea ,5th diarrhea and vomiting ,the 6th in hospital for 2 nights and the rest of the week I'm in bed I can't even make the bed, The IP port does not help.

It's every Tuesday, I still have about 12 weeks to go then chemo.

I go on Tuesday for another dose but I'm stopping like you I need to be normal for a while get my strength back and I will go back on Caelyx, quality of life is as important as longevity. Take care of yourself Lorraine xx๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

Hi Lorraine, speak with the pharmacist/druggist. There are many types of mouthwash that help with dry mouth, at least there are here in Canada. Good luck!

I'm in the states but Biotene--if you can get--they have many products but the one that helps me when its really bad is a "mouth rinse" that, for about a half hour, makes your mouth feel normal! Maybe if you could swish with it when you can't sleep, the half hour or so will get to back to sleep and let you be! It's OTC here and hopefully you have an equivalent if not that product itself.

Depends how you feel about sugar with this solution - I've suffered dry mouth off and on for years, not cancer related, and a nurse told me to coat my tongue with liquid glycerin at bedtime, so I do that when I'm desperate, as well as keeping a bottle of water with a sports top next to the bed to sip if I wake up. The trouble with liquid glycerin is, its no good for your teeth, and many people with cancer are also trying to avoid excess sugar... Blocked nose at night can mean you sleep with your mouth open, which increases the problem, obviously. I've even resorted to sticking my lips shut with micropore tape when its really bad...

Well, I only stick my lips together if my tongue gets so dry it cracks open - and it does, quite often, for which I highly recommend Iglu gel applied to the crack. Otherwise, a soft neck collar worn at night helps keep your mouth closed - but all this isn't because of cancer treatment for me, it happens to me periodically and its nothing to do with cancer or the treatment cos I'm not having any! I hope the problem passes soon...
