Is there a connection between fluoride and osteopenia

I was diagnosed with osteopenia 4 years ago and am currently undergoing the usual treatment.

I grew up in the 1950's on the Isle de Montreal in a small village in the outskirts of Montreal, Baie D'Urfe. Our drinking water came from a well in the front garden (quite civilised with an electric pump and all!).

However, Isle de Montreal was a volcanic bulge many thousands of years ago resulting in the magma coming close to the surface. This magma contains a lot of Florine which enters the ground water and the water I drank in my pre-teen days.

I have found it difficult to find out much information relating to this drinking water that might have a bearing on my osteopenia. Plenty of guff from the dental profession that seems to drown out any of the information I am looking for. ( I have to admit, I have had little tooth decay but lost four molars through fracturing down the middle of the teeth.)

Is anybody able to throw any light on overdosing (if that is what has happened) on fluoride?

Thanks in advance, Tom.

Hey Tom, that’s an interesting point about the fluoride in your well water. I’ve read that too much fluoride, especially in childhood, might have long-term effects on bones, though it’s not always easy to pinpoint. I grew up in an area with higher fluoride levels too, and my dentist has always told me it’s mostly a concern for teeth, but I’ve wondered if it could affect bone health as well. It might be worth talking to your doctor about your fluoride exposure history and whether it could be linked to your osteopenia, just to get a clearer picture.
