This bone health clinic is telling me I should take Tymlos (abaloparatide injection) or Evenity(romosozumab-Aqaba). They say I am at risk of have a hip fracture with a dexa score of -3.5

I don’t want to take drugs, but I don’t want a fracture either, I am very active going to Aqua fit 5 days a week. If anyone could give me advice about theses two drugs I would appreciate it.

I take Tymlos...I have 10 spinal fractures, and it has increased density 50% in the first year. Surgeon looks at bones, during spinal surgeries and is pleased with results so far. And my lower spine fusions have not failed, they are strong and in place. Surgeon put me on Tymlos. I don't think results are as good for hip issues, but my hips in CT and MRIs are looking fine, no problems noted. With so many fractures, DEXA is nearly worthless, so I've not had a follow-up. Tymlos side effects were annoying the first two weeks...then I stopped for two days, started back and they went away. I had headaches, mild ones within 30 minutes of injecting at night. Dizzy spells, that were frustrating, again, started about an hour after injecting, went on for a few hours, so getting up to go to the bathroom in the night was tricky. BP went up sky high the first few weeks, doctor's office nearly stroked, then I told them I was new on Tymlos, and all was fine.

You really need to do a lot of reading about these medications before agreeing to take them. They may affect your immune system and have other unwanted side effects. It's always wise to be very cautious before taking any of the relatively new drugs. Also, don't forget that most of what doctors learn about new drugs comes from the drug manufacturers, and they may not even have time to look into the benefits or otherwise more closely.

I did learn from my own quick look into it that Tymlos is considered one of the safer drugs. The same is not true of Evenity. However discontinuing Tymlos can lead to rebound osteoporosis, so once you start you will need to continue taking it, or if you have to stop it must switch to another medication.

Whatever you decide on, whether one of these newer ones with their relatively unknown effects, or an older drug which at least has better known disadvantages so you know what to expect and how to deal with them if they occur, you should also make sure you are getting all the necessary nutrients for bone building, and that your activity includes load-bearing exercise. You might find my story helpful with some ideas. And I assume your doctor has tested you for "secondary causes of osteoporosis"?

I thought prolia was the only drug that caused rebound osteoporosis, the other drugs, like forteo and Tymlos should be followed up with some thing otherwise you will lose your gains but prolia, if you do not follow up with a biphosphonate, will most certainly cause rebound fractures. Just goes to show you that we all have to do our homework and make sure that we are getting correct information.

Yes, I should be more careful with terminology. :)

tymlos sounds relatively good, my Mum was on teriparatide,

the dr mentioned that 3/4 of the daily dose was possible if ill-effects,

but make sure your dr knows their stuff,

and also have a plan what happens if you had to stop taking it due to ill-effects,

my Mum's drs had no idea and it has possibly added to the catastrophe that she has been suffering - starting and stopping tptd in the middle of a prolia dose 💔
