I recently had a DEXA scan which shows I am at the top of the osteopenia score - any higher and I will have osteoporosis. This is worst in my hips and neck of femur(-2.3 and -2.4). The scan showed my spine is not as severe (-1.4). My GP has prescribed Advil-D3 caplets 750mg + 5mcg but I haven't taken them.
I really don't know where to start and there is so much to read my brain hurts already. I really would appreciate some guidance just to get me started and help pull my head out the sand.
Thank you.

I don't understand why advil? That is an anti inflammatory. My suggestion is to find dr that specializes in osteoporosis. I made a huge mistake by not doing that. Too many changes in Ned's etc. Very hard for a GP to know all there is.
Thanks for replying Maverick2015. My mistake. Should have been Adcal and I didn’t notice the autocorrection. But I feel you’re probably right in that I need to see a specialist. Though in my experience knowledgable specialists are few and far between.
Just look around. Was a huge mistake on my part and now issues. Some people see endocrinologist or some go to actual osteoporosis clinic I am going to trauma center that has fracture prevention clinic who has dr in osteoporosis. Good luck
I totally agree with Maverick2015. I made the same huge mistake by allowing my Primary to manage my OP!
My (first & current) Endo however is not the right fit either as she believes in drug, drugs, drugs I’m inclined to think I will seek out a functional doctor. I want someone on my side in this issue.
Yes, I too think this is the best plan but I've been down so many dead ends (even with a functional doctor, though not about OP) that I don't know where to turn. Some of the functional doctors on the Thyroid UK list look hopeful though. Please let me know if you find someone.
Oh that is discouraging Changing doctors is a major ordeal only for it not to be a good match. And here in the U S, Functional doctors can charge so much & some (or all?) do not accept insurance.
Hi  Piglet1956 I too have Osteopenia verging on Osteoporosis but worse in the lower part of my spine than my hips so the other way round to you. Have a look at the replies I received to the post I made about this as I think they may offer some helpful nuggets of info for you too. healthunlocked.com/boneheal...
But before that I would recommend you have a look at Dr. Doug Lucus on youtube - link below. I watched a lot of his videos, then signed up for the free masterclass which he tells you about in each video, and then through that masterclass you can access a free course called Bone Foundations. No pressure to buy anything at all! He does of course have a paid for support course but the Bone Foundations course is definitely free. I found everything in the Bone Foundations course was laid out very clearly module by module (videos with a workbook). I've looked at a lot of 'bone expert' websites over the last few months since my DEXA and gained a lot from all of them but the course from Dr. Lucus was probably the easiest to follow chronologically so would say it's a very good first step when starting out with research. Once you have learnt more then come back to this forum and also to the Bone Health forum on HU and start asking more questions as you will be better prepared to ask for the specifics you need.
That’s incredibly helpful. Thank you for sharing this information. I’ll definitely have a look at the replies to your post and the Dr Lucus course. I hope it’s helping you by now.
You're welcome 😊 I have made a few changes and continue with my investigations. Time will tell if they have had a good effect when I have my next DEXA in another years time. Although I plan to have a REMS scan in September - once you read my post I linked to you'll understand why REMS instead of DEXA! Good luck with your research, start by implementing one positive change at a time as you go learning more.
Some interesting Facebook groups to follow - The Strong Bones Challenge about exercises, Osteoporosis Education and Support and Naturally Better Bones Osteoporosis Group - they all have Files to check out to help get started.
Well the Advil is for pain if you have any , the D3 is to strengthen the bones. You may be able to cotrol it without going on meds yet. There are plenty of Videos on YouTube with bone Osteo docs showing exercise, diet and natural things to strengthen your bones. Even though I'm ancient and I'm on Osteo meds, I am still doing the exercises and trying to eat better. Like Salmon, cooked spinach , things with Omega oils. Just a thought. Good Luck
sorry just looked at your profile , I didn't know about your thyroid. Your Endo may not want to add a Osteo med until he sees if your #'s can just come up without adding something to your med soup.
