Can you have H pylori twice

Had H pylori around 20 months ago, diagnosed by stool test. Took the triple therapy treatment and continued with Omeprazole 20mg twice a day as my GP said I had gastritis.

I asked him about testing post triple therapy to confirm HP had gone, he said not necessary.

I still take Omeprazole as still get some gastric symptoms. Have been particularly hit by it this last month or so particularly the knotty type of pain in the lower sternum area which is what took me to GP in the first place?

Can a person have HP more than once?

Thank you

You should go back to GP. I was fine after a couple of weeks. Stopped taking Lansoprazole before Endoscopy and just used Gaviscon Advance if I needed it. You need a blood test one month after antibiotics have finished to make sure H Pylori has gone. I was told by hospital that sometimes another course of antibiotics may be needed if it hasn’t gone.

I think you can because my doc agreed to me having another test. If you do get another test be aware that you need to stop Omeprazole for at least two weeks before the test otherwise you get a false negative.

Thank you - at the moment I dread the thought of coming off it, I'm glugging Gaviscon advanced at bedtime just to make sure I get some sleep, am sleeping sat up, wake up feeling OK.....then the day either stays the same and I don't feel too bad or it deteriorates from there. I'll give them a ring. Thank ou

Sorry, should have said a stool test, not blood test to confirm absence of H Pylori. This can take a few days for result to come through. Hope all goes well for you.

Thank you, I thought it strange! I will make an appointment - I am feeling so rough, good day, bad day, and so on, I've been giving it time to see if it improved as I thought I had just had a bad episode of gastritis, but enough is enough now. Thank you!

I was told no need to repeat HP test.

Have you done a food diary?

Hi no, my HP was 2021, but I've had similar persistent symptoms recently despite still being on Omeprazole.

My infection didn’t clear first time round - I still had symptoms and second stool test came back positive. GP then tried alternative antibiotics and then it cleared. However, I’ve continued to have problems in the 5 years since. Two gastroscopies confirmed no h pylori infection, but as nothing else found, just have to carry on with the ppi and watch diet etc.
