It was Internet Safety Day yesterday so I was wondering what is your family's policy on screen time?

How old are your children and how do you monitor screen time?

This is a great website with advice for keeping children and young people of all ages safe online - internetmatters.org/

Hi, that link looks really helpful thank you. I’ve found screentime a bit of a nightmare to manage sometimes.

When the children were younger it felt easier to set the time limits and control access on devices and the issue was more around behaviour management when they couldn’t get on their games.

As they got older though it seems to be differently complicated. For us the main issue has been at what point do teens take ownership of their own controls and learn good skills at learning to manage their own timetable.

I went to a really good school screen safety talk put on when my oldest was 10. It talked about the importance of beginning to talk to our children about their games, and their YouTubers and what they were watching. This advice really helped for quite a positive screen relationship.

Over time we tried to develop a joint ownership of screentime with our teens, so by the time they were 15 they had much more self management but with us on the sidelines supporting and stepping in and taking full ownership back if and when needed. We had certain rules in place around bedtime routine but generally it became a partnership as they became late teens. For us it has made the screens more manageable 😊🤞🏻.

Yes, it's so complicated isn't it? Especially with technology moving so quickly. Schools are a good source of resources though.
