Hi, I notice some of you are a couple of years post op, I am just coming up to 16 months. I wonder if any of you can tell me how long before your ribs stop aching? I find mine very painful at times.

It varies a lot by individual. In my case I'm 5 years post op and my ribs still ache. Not all the time but I am aware of them. i do know that ribs are one of the most difficult bones to heal after being surgically broken.
Hi, i dont have much trouble with my ribs, a little saw perhapes every now & again, i have more truble with my lunges, first thing in a morning when i take the dog for a long walk it takes a while to get going, i think its down to the op & all the chemo we have bean through, with what we have bean through its like being hit by a juggernaut, no wander we are feeling a bit saw.
All the best Peter
lol too right
I too still get ribs aching now and again, also pain on the join, think that could be scar tissue? I use the phrase run over by a bus and back again. Prefer the juggernaut!
Yep, think it is the juggernaut that hit me. How long post op are you? I am going to start swimming again so hopefully that will help X
I am 3 years post op and my ribs are only just feeling less sore. Also had trouble with lungs and found deep breathing helped with walking especially.
12/6/2008 post op & still improving, and yes i think swimming would be great,
i can see those ribs getting stronger already.
4 years post op. a lot of one side is still numb.If I do deep breathing it feels more like lung-ache than rib-ache if there is such a thing!?? Gradients still puff me out but less than before especially if I don't eat first. I have started going to the gym which would have been impossible 2 years ago. Slowly it gets better!
Three years down the line and mine still ache. Mind 14 months after the operatation I had part of the sixth rib and cartlidge removed due to oesteomyelitis, so that didn't help!
Hi Yorkshirerose,
I am now 5 years post surgery, my ribs, right arm and shoulder do ache now and again, mainly after swimming, tennis or gardening. It is more of an dull ache than being painfull.
The pain did ease off after 30 months or so, and regular massage of the neck area also helped.
It's my knees causing the pain at the moment, nothing to do with the operation, more sports injury and age related I believe.
Best regards
Dave C
Hi yorkshirerose
My surgery was done through my back (18mths ago), I had ribs removed. Because I'm a wheelchair user I'm putting strain on my upper body all the time and it will always hurt. Good luck with the swimming, just take it easy to begin with - no 1000 meter butterfly racing. I was back match fishing 5 wks after surgery without a problem -just got tired quicker.

I have had and still have a lot of trouble with my ribs, the bottom rib especially sticks out rather a lot and still causes a lot of discomfort, unfortunately, I am not able to do much exercise as I too struggle with my weight, but I potter around the garden when I can. I try not to let things slow me down too much!
Best of luck with your recovery
Stan
