Oesophageal Sphincter

Hello. My wife had gastro-oesophageal cancer 12 years ago and had surgery to remove the cancer. Thankfully all was successful and she leads a very normal life.

As one knows, post surgery one cannot lie down flat as the oesophageal sphincter has been removed thus causing acid to come up from the stomach.

As medical advances have obviously occurred in the last 12 years, has anyone heard of the sphincter being replaced following gastro-oesophageal surgery? I think this will be different from GERD but any info is greatly received.

I went into hospital for an endoscopy and I panicked because I couldn't breathe and pulled it out of my chest and since October I've had foam in my throat every night and morning I was sent to ENT and told I have gerd but I don't have any reflux I am finding it very difficult to swallow anything I'm always tired but can't sleep at night because of anxiety I think they have paralyzed my esophagus but I don't want to get another endoscopy done while I'm awake. Can anyone tell me what else this is because I am scared I have been trying to vibrate the throat all day every day and it feels raw inside my chest. I'm so scared of going back to the hospital and getting it done again. Any help with this matter is appreciated. I really don't think it is gerd because I have elevated the bed and been taking the Flamatodine 2 a day for weeks now and it's not changed. I don't know what to say to the GP to be taken seriously.

It is normal to have anxiety during a endoscopy. I certainly do even with sedation. Write your symptoms down and go and tell your GP. It sounds like you need some medication short term for anxiety. You have been told you have GERD. You need to speak to your GP and let him explain what all this means as he will have the report and what lifestyle changes you can make to get better ie cutting out alcohol, spicy and fatty foods etc. I have taken medication at night for short periods for anxiety and it really helps. Go tomorrow.
