Violently sick

Hello. My mum is 72 and had surgery 8 years ago. She also had a stretch as she had problems with food getting stuck. Within the last 6 months she is being violently sick most evenings. She has had an endoscopy and found that food is causing a blockage. They are not able to do another stretch. The doctor told her she needs to eat small amounts and to choose mainly fish and meat and to avoid vegetarian foods including vegetables. My mum is struggling with knowing what a small portion is. She is old school used to eating 3 meals a day meat and veg. Any ideas greatly appreciated as she has now chosen not to go out due to the sickness. Thank you

Hi Shelley - might be worth chatting with your mums specialist nurses and asking why she can’t have another stretch, some people have stretches for years.

Unfortunately you do have to eat smaller portions than normal, I have an 8 inch side plate that I use and don’t overfill but like your mum I’m back to more normal meal times with snacks in between. Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, creamed chicken, ice cream all go down well, you must chew really well too. I hope your mum gets some help as being sick is awful.

Hi Shelly, I use a small plate like Molly too and if eating with others or out I put half the meal aside In tupperwares and eat it later or at friends ask for just the bits I can eat on a side plate. Ask if puréed veg would be acceptable and look at oak field or Wiltshire farm foods meals. Always have a sauce or gravy with a meal it helps it slip down

Fish pie, prawn cocktail, grated egg mayonnaise, omelet's scrambled eggs, shepherds pie I tend to avoid foods like pastry crusts, doughnuts Yorkshire puds, suet puddings, stodgy cakes

Snack or graze all day if you can every cup of coffee or tea have biscuits, or something have small yogurts or kids snacks in the fridge or a drawer easily available to try and help her change her habits

As Molly says chew everything throughly is very good advice it does help and it's so easy to not do it

Good luck 8 years is great

I eat roughly half of what I used to eat for main meals, plus small snacks in between. Also don't have drinks with meals except sips for tablets. 6 years on I have more or less mastered this. I am now 73. Your Mum should definitely be getting help from a dietician or gastroenterologist. I am still on the books for dietitian at Derby. Hope this helps
