Hello . My endoscopy in June 2020 showed chronic gastritis, bile and hiatus hernia, my biopsy showed intestinal metaplasia . I was told that they do not follow up with repeat scopes as I do not have a family history of gastric cancers . My gp wrote to him to tell them how worried I was because of the metaplasia and he agreed to do a one off scope in 3 years to do mapping . My question is I cannot wait for 3 years ... my mental health won’t allow me .. I would like one annually so does that mean I have to go privately or can my gp do something for me to get one sooner . If I do go private for a scope then who do I go to to get one done .
Would really appreciate any advise , thanks advance x

Hi yes if I was you I’d see about going private, I don’t no much about metaplasia , I myself have reflux , hiatus hernia , gastritis, and Barrett’s esophagus, and that’s why I have a endoscopy every two years, as it’s a pre cancerous condition. Good luck .
3 years is the standard time for surveillance for intestinal metaplasia (Barrett’s Esophagus) in the UK. However if you have a large segment or dysplasia (mutating) it may be done more frequently. If it is very small - under 1cm and near the junction with your stomach - it may not be considered Barrett’s at all by definition and not under surveillance. If yours is very low risk but you still want an annual check you’d need to go private. The Spire do this procedure at many of their hospitals and it would cost around £2000 I think unless you have private insurance.
