Acidophilus tablets and reflux

Hi all,

I am 7yrs post Ivor Lewis, I've had so much trouble with my digestive system I'm at my wits end. I am on 40mg omeprazole but I'd like to come off them altogether if possible ( re: fear of stomach cancer). I've been told that maybe taking acidophilus tablets might help with acid / bile reflux, along with all the other methods we do. Has anyone had any experience with these?

Many thanks

June

Hi June,

I managed to ween off from PPIs. It took quite a while. I put myself on Ranitidine as I found it more effective and then weened down on that.

acidophilus did help me to.

I’m not aware that there is any link to stomach cancer and PPIs.

Kind regards,

Jay

Hi there,

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I've done research into ppi's and there is a small risk of stomach cancer. I just can't get my head around what would happen if I got it, what treatments etc would be open to us. I know atm I can't go without, I've tried cutting down, but because I've got 20mg tabs I'm thinking I need to get some 10mg so I can come down slowly. It's all a learning curve.

hi,

i’m 6 years post and have had lots of issues. i am on omeprazole 40mg 2x day also. wasn’t aware of stomach cancer concerns but will research now.

i’m taking probiotic tablets and from time to time some of that yoplait drink.

also, talk to your convulsants about sulcrfate, it helps me with reflux. it’s a specialist only prescription but works for me.

also, are you on creon? it’s a pancreatic enzyme helps a lot with digestion.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

Ive started to drink actimel daily, but as you know too much liquid makes me sick. I am on Creon certainly helps with bowel problems, I will ask about the sulcrafate, to be honest I was under the impression that when the op was done we wouldn't need ppi's anymore,

Hi June. I did try a few years ago to wean myself offf them. Due to fears of the side effects long term. But I developed Barratts which is not at all what I wanted. It was only discovered by chance at an Endescopy to do a stretch. I am now back on them for life as the doc said the chances of cancer from the tabs are a lot less than from the Barratts. Please be careful and take advice.

I didn’t have any reflux or pain before my original diagnosis just a hiccup swallowing toasted cheese sandwiches so it’s highly possible I had Barratts and silent reflux the first time.

Hi liz_crisp.

Thank you for your reply,

It's because of the Barrett's I had to have an IL, I guess because my tummy is smaller and where it is, is what's bothering me, my brother is very poorly with cancer too and that. Makes me think maybe it's a gene thing, although my cancer was because if the acid reflux. I've tried cutting my omeprazole intake by half but I'm getting acid at night, so I think I'm going to have to chat to the doc and get some lower dose ones so I can take 30mg instead of 40mg. Trouble is I'm a worry wort,

It's great to have this group and be able to chat about it to people who know what your talking about.

Thank you once again

June x

I don't know about reflux but I find they help calm down spells of dahlia. I had tests which found too many bad bacteria in my gut. With needing to eat little and often and to try to keep weight up and cholesterol levels down sometimes things go wrong with gut health
