Hello I've had oesophagitis and gastritis for 5 years. The meds dont make much difference to the pain.

Now I'm getting a hoarse voice on and off and throat clearing with what feels like phlegm. Is this all the GERD symptoms?? Anyone had this. A friend has Barretts Oesophagus and says it causes her to be croaky cough and clearing throat...just like I'm getting now after 5 yrs of GERD. Anyone??

Dont know I was a smoker but stopped. I've had to avoid lots of food and take two oesomaprazole and 2 Ranitidine and Gaviscon but still in pain yes I dont know how I've coped so long. My kids have had to watch me go to bed crying in pain a lot. The hoarse voice throat ckearingbis new symptom I was supposed to see GI consultant next week but because of virus it's been postponed. All I want is another endoscope but chances now are very slim . Thankyou

I really feel for you. We understand here as many of us suffering with various things. It could all have been caused by silent reflux (LPR) as those are some of the symptoms. Please try to read the Acid Watcher diet by Jonathan Aviv, it's really eye opening and life changing IF you can stick to the two phases in the book but I'm sure you'd be willing to try anything? He isn't anybody, he is a Professor of ENT (&GI Dr I think but def ENT) and is a consultant treating such people with these conditions. You might be able to get the book from a library but you can buy it on Amazon and some top bookstores. He was the first to pioneer the safer, slimmer endoscope that goes via the nose instead whilst patient awake in chair!

Also in addition to my reply.....

Not sure what country you're in but if England have a look at downloading the free document on LPR (silent reflux) from the nhs Liverpool University hospital

Check out the latest on Italy. They've ordered tests for all & isolated cases, since then no new cases!

basten profile image
bastenā€¢ in reply toJudley

Hope our Government UK start doing this as I've heard of many not feeling well and confused and just want to know if it's the virus or just mild cold. My son has been told to isolate as hes got a tight chest but doesn't know if its virus . They say in uk we are not doing regular immediate testing on all. I so hope Italy has soon had its last case. Why doesnt the UK listen!! šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

I know I completely agree!

There have been lots going off to self isolate in local schools and colleges yet I've just seen gangs of them out when schools are closed (some here). We have cases here in our home town!

I've read about Liverpool University Hospital Dr Smart who does non invasive Stretta procedure. I've contacted them out of curiosity. Thank you so much šŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļøšŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļø

Judley profile image
Judleyā€¢ in reply tobasten

Oh thanks for the tip. I wanted to go there after reading their info but was told a strict No! because it is out of my area. Thank you for mentioning the name! What's the Stretta procedure?

basten profile image
bastenā€¢ in reply toJudley

Stretta is something to do with strengthening down inside. It may be out of your area but if your GP refers you you are entitled to go I think. I once went to London right out of my area as my GP kindly referred me but they never got to help much.

Cant really go anywhere and do much in these circumstances. I was to see a GI consultant next week and its cancelled. Admin said the consultants will be going through the 200 referrals, picking out those they think they can help etc and may do a phone consultation which has no time or day slot. Plus two GI people are off sick!! Its going to be a long wait. All I wanted at present was to see or speak to a GI and hope they would put me forward asap for endoscope. My surgery do them but not if you're over 65 which I am. That Liverpool GI consultant has had lots of success rates with STRETTA procedure where people have been symptom free for years and no longer need the drugs!! That would be a dream come true for me after 5 yrs of crying in such pain all inside like someone's ripped acid inside me!!

I'm also in pain but I don't want to go into it now. That's why I know how you feel.

You might be able to go private if you can afford it. It's about Ā£1,000-Ā£1,600

basten profile image
bastenā€¢ in reply toJudley

Ok I feel for you I do. No I'm 70 and cant afford private. I'm still paying off card hard where I did go private for something else and that was a waste of time !!

Try to relax . I've been told I must try to meditate and deep breathing etc and focus on different parts of body slowly. Hard to do I know when in pain. I'm ok at night as my tablets knock me out and no pain in night. I had pancreatitis 2015 but not since. Its def GERD etc. Take care feel free to mail me any time

Thanks

I was left so long... Not listened to

Yes I do meditate.

It's just awful cos now we could be waiting god knows how long and we have cancer in the family.

bastenā€¢ in reply toJudley

Oh no I'm sooo sorry to hear that šŸ˜ŖšŸ˜Ŗ. I can understand how you say you weren't listened to..left too long. This is my biggest fear that after 5 years now this throat stuff something isnt right. Two years ago I had a big big bust up with my local hospital GI man . Mostly my fault as the pain made me very depressed and argumentative with him. So much so that when a GP referred me to his department he remembered me and wrote back refusing to see me even stooping his colleagues there. I was distraught. My Gp later said hed refer me to another hospital further away which he did in January and said he wouldn't mention anything . So hence I had this appointment next week...now postponed. I have to tread carefully if and when I do see them now so they dont know about my fall out with my local hospital or theyll ring them and I'd be in a boat without the paddle. This is my last chance to hope for another endoscope.

I do know I have dismotility too of oesophagus from test where it doesnt work 100%. .

I send my prayers and thought to you and your family who in what's going on are vulnerable. My son has just been told he has to isolate. Hes so tired slept lots but has a tight chest and feels breathless. In bed he said all sweaty. His GP said it could be the virus but as we said no testing available. He is a smoker unfortunately and has been honest with GP. He did phone 111 but as he wasnt coughing they said its not the virus but talk to your GP. So hes got to wait and see if it gets better or worse. His partner is isolating now of course. They dont live with me just 15 mins away I live on my own with my 2 cats. My daughter has a small hairdressing business within school premises and now its closing Friday so her salon has too so now shes out of work and no income as shes self emoliyed. She has asthma bad a lot. I cant go there or her here. I've managed to take some food to an old lady who cant go out and lives on her own. She has mental health probs but seems to now understand why I cant stay etc.

Thankyou your welcome.

Its info@strettacentre.com for the attention of Dr Smart.

I dont know if I'll get a replybhavent done so yet. I guess they're busy. I just told them I had GERD for 5 yrs and meds dont stop the burning pain and that I had also a hiatus hernia. So would I qualify . I also asked if Dr Smart does the stretta procedure on the NHS.

let me know how you get on. I dont know if Dr Smart will read my mail.

Judleyā€¢ in reply tobasten

Thanks. It wasn't about that procedure though, I was wanting to contact Lpool Uni hosp to ask other queries about my probs. Gp kept saying burning mouth, previous 2 ENTs said couldn't see anything (few months apart), previous GI said wouldn't give another endoscopy (already had one clear that year but didn't have symptoms then), he said didn't sound digestive related cos not in chest (I knew this incorrect). None of them either any good or trying to save money. Already on PPIs but kept giving other medicines etc which seemed to make things worse. Then new guy ordered barium this Jan which was clear, I was puzzled. Pain now changed along way, said he'd give me endoscopy but scared will be called off. I should have called Lpool before. There is a number but doubt would give email & I'd put it better like that. A lot of us including other illnesses will now likely wait god only knows due to this very sad, scary problem around the world. I need (as others) to get better for my daughter, she needs me here šŸ˜¢

In addition to today's reply. Ask to try divalent - many have swore by it or pantaprozole, lots say it's stronger than esomaprozole, omeprazole & lansoprazole then there's another ppi after that stronger. Also many say it can be a bile problem not acid that's why people hadn't got better on them - some for 10+ years. Needs an experienced GI to truly discover but where & how to find one now!!!

Oh my you sound as though you've been messed around like me. I dont know anything else about liverpool University Hospital. I only Googled it!!. Trouble is now getting through to say a GI secretary but they are really maxed out with all this going on. I'm like you trying to get well and help but going round in circles.

My pharmacy is only letting 2 people in at a time and my meds I ordered 5 days ago aren't in!! This is really panicking me cos if I miss just one night of the Zopiclone I've had for years I have massive panic attack and even seizures.

I dont know what we can do in these circumstances. You could see if the hospital secretary (ask for Gastro secretary's department) has an email address and say you need to send an email but I doubt if theyll take any notice as all requests should go via your gp who can refer you even though out of area. But the NHS of course are working flat out and my GI app was postponed and she said the consultants will be going through the 200 referrals and choosing to phone only those they think they need to!! Plus 2 consultants are off sick.

I am living in constant pain and this situation has upset me greatly too after being in such pain for 5 yrs.

I wish I could advise you better.

I cant get to see a gp unless bad not just for change of or trying new med.

Yes I do have bile in my stomach as I have no gallbladder. It showed up on my last endoscope 2 yrs ago

I paid private to see a GI who specialises in bile acid malabsorption which can also give you diarrhoea and fatty stools. He tested my poop and said no all ok. He gave me some Sucralfate which was to try and help but it burnt even more!! So I stopped it. I also have to take 3 different laxatives a day due to all the meds I'm on. Yes if you can find a GI that your gp can refer you to. You can and are entitled to that. They did it for me. I cant remember the name of the gi who specialises in bile acid malabsorption. A dr Aziz I think in London. Theres a digestive disease centre in Bournemouth hospital. A Dr R McCrudden. Hed see you maybe if your gp referred you.

Dont give up. Unfortunately they told me I should stop trying to find the reasons why it all burns all inside me when I but I'm not giving up yet!!
