Hi Valerie01
I feel your concern
If you have a contact number for your physio or GI Specialist nurse or Oncology Dept ...... ASK
TBH he will need to be as fit as possible and weigh as much as possible
My best wishes
Fizzy35
The exercise will be good for him, the fitter he is before the operation the better .
Hi Valerie01
I worked up to the evening before my op.I was very unwell afterwards with sepsis and pneumonia. The medical staff felt that the fact I survived the op and 53 days in icu was down to the fact I had stayed active. He will be the only one to judge how he feels. I felt my survival and subsequent return to almost normal activity was down to me staying active.Although everyone’s recovery is individual I felt it helped me 👍🏻
Thank you for your reply if it was not so close to his operation and Corona virus I wouldn't be as bothered it's just I dont want him putting himself in a environment where lots of people are that could possibly have Corona virus and not yet be aware of it and him then getting I'll and not be able to have his operation he loves to go to the gym and normally it's not a problem it's just dont see the sence of putting himself in the situation but thank you for your reply
Hi - my surgeon said I should do exercise of some sort to prepare for a long op. I walked daily and used an exercise bike - I was 62 when I had my op. The fitter you are for the op the better. I am sure as long as he is not overdoing it he will be fine. Good luck for 23rd
Best wishes
Hi Val
There is no doubt at all that the fitter he is pre op the better his body will cope with it, don't fret he is doing the right thing, I lived in a retirement flat prior to my op and I walked the corridors and stairs as often as I could and have no doubt at all that it was a help for me, I was up on my feet the day after the op, any exercise is good.
Good luck to you both for a great oucome from the Ivor Lewes op.
Jeff
In my view if that what he wants to do, it's a good sign. I've been actively fit most of my life and it's helped me overcome many health problems.
Hi Valerie
Yes, it’s essential he is fit as he can be for the forthcoming operation. However, as he’s been accepted for the operation he must be considered reasonably fit all ready.
I am involved with a project and trials of a fitness exercise programme for patients with gastric cancer. The study suggests exercises for both pre and post op. It is, therefore, very important that your husband is not only fit initially but post-op as well, as that will help his recovery.
Best of luck.
Can he exercise at home? I'd be a bit worried about Coronavirus infection in a gym.
No he is doing the right thing, I did a lot of walking leading up to my op
Hi Valerie, I agree with the others that your husband working out at the gym is a good thing for preparing for his upcoming surgery. My only concern is the big elephant in the room COVID-19. You mentioned he is disabled. Usually that means compromised autoimmune system. COVID19 is just hitting the US so schools are being shut down, nursing homes visitations has been severely restricted, hospitals only allowing 1 family member to visit at a time and must be asymptotic, no gatherings over 100 so that meant that church services are only held online. The virus is just hitting the US so not sure where the status in the UK is. Herd that China is over the worst of the pandemic. That would be my concern that he is the at risk population with lower immune system. If I’m wrong that his disability hasn’t lowered his immune system then working out at the gym isn’t a problem that it is a good thing. 😊
He needs to be as fit and as fat as possible before the op. Any exercise that expands and strengthens lung capacity and general health is great. As mentioned above if he can do it at home and avoid the covoid 19 it would be best. I was probably at my fittest ever before the op as I swam and exercised every day for the 6 weeks before it, after I had finished the chemo. 10 years on this year xx
