Acid becoming a major problem

I've suffered from GORD for several years but I found it could be regulated easily by avoiding certain foods ... Then 2 years ago I had my gall bladder removed after suffering from gall stones. The last few months I've found that the slightest thing can set off my GORD to the point where I'm vomiting bile and blood. Even travel sickness can set it off. Or not eating. It's getting ridiculous. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi there, i think anyone on this site would say"go to the doctors" especially if you are vomiting blood aswell. I also have gords and a hiatus hernia and undergoing investigative tests at present. There are some very experienced people on this forum who may have been through similar problems to you and can advise you alot better than me but they will all say see a doctor. Hang on in there and someone will reply. Best wishes.

Hi i would ask for an endoscopy. It may be something going on in your stomach. I had suffered gastris before having gall bladder out then got oesohagal cancer. Best to get early diagnosis it may be you need a tablet in the form of lansaprozal or opeprazole. Good Luck

If you are suffering from bile, the reflux would be alkali rather than acid and you (or indeed your doctor) will have to make sure that the medication you take is correct. Taking Gaviscon may well help a bit because that works by creating a protective raft to prevent reflux coming up into your oesophagus for a few hours.

The doctor may ask what colour the blood is, as it will make a difference as to whether it has come from your stomach or not.

But none of the above changes the importance of promptly consulting your doctor about what is happening.

Try bicarbonate of soda in a soft drink.

Thanks for all your replies and advice. I will be seeing a doctor soon because I'm due annual blood tests for my thyroid. By the way gaviscon is now my new best friend 😜

I also have had GORD for may years, not easily controlled by diet so I have been on PPI meds (originally omeprazole and they lanzoprazole) for a number of years. Worked very well for me. When I had my gallbladder removed just over a year ago, bile reflux started to be a problem too. It is very easy to differentiate between acid reflux and bile reflux because of the bitter taste of the bile which is absent with the burning acid reflux. My GP referred me for tests and I've had two endoscopies which have identified Grade 3 gastritis. So far there is no sign of Barretts oesophagus. Apparently bile reflux is very corrosive and, as others have said, I would strongly advise a visit to the doctor so that it can be checked out. I have been referred for Nissen fundoplication surgery for a large hiatus hernia, which I have not yet made a decision about, but the surgeon has said they will monitor the gastritis with further endoscopies.

I would urge you to get it checked out so that you can get a fuller picture of what's going on and get the correct treatment.

Good luck.

I suggest you go to the doctor and request an endoscopy. I was suffering for more than a year with acid reflux. I was prescribed omeprazole. After a while I started to get stomach pain and then for the last few months loss of appetite and vomiting. I finally went for an endoscopy at the beginning of July and they identified a very serious ulcer. They also took a biopsy and I have just been diagnosed with stomach cancer. I am 57 years old. This has knocked me for six and they are talking about removing my stomach. I don't want to scare you but please get checked out. Don't let it continue without further investigation.
