Prior to my oesophageal surgery, I had a series of preparatory scans which indicated secondary liver metastasis but my oncologist was not convinced that the concensus interpretation was wholly accurate - so, I underwent keyhole liver surgery, followed by a biopsy, and finally a liver resection to prove it one way or another.

Thankfully in my case the all clear was given in the end and my operation to remove my oesophagus went ahead. I have no idea whether mine is a rare case but at one point it seemed that there was nothing that could be done. I am extremely grateful that the scans were investigated further.

I think that the presence of metastatic spread (ie the same cancer appearing somewhere else in the body) into the liver is an important issue because if it is indeed true that this has happened,it would normally rule out curative surgery on the basis that the operation would not ultimately be successful in clearing you of the cancer.

Interpreting scans can be a very tricky process, so it is important that they are investigated very thoroughly when they look ambiguous, and there may be more tests to be done to make sure of the situation before the treatment pathway can be decided.

Not having surgery had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. .This was my pet scan after my treatment. They found something on my liver. Had a ultra sound done.and they didn't find anything on my liver. Now my oncologist want the ultra sound done again by the doctor who read my pet scan. . I feel so anxious. It a waiting game for me now.

Prior to my oesophageal surgery I had the usual CT and Pet scans. Activity had shown up near my kidneys. It turned out that I also have a condition called CCL. A form of leukemia. I went ahead with the surgery and Chemo prior and after the surgery and am now on a watch and wait programme for the CLL. I am feeling very fit two years on and consider myself very lucky to feel as I do. I have few problems apart from the odd reflux (not pleasant with severe pain and earache for an hour or two) Regards to all.l
