Has anyone, post esophago/gastrectomy ,suffered from D&V as a result of food poisoning ?
I was advised that owing to reduced or even zero secretion of Hydrochloric Acid from the stomach remnants the normal protective mechanism of acid sterilization no longer existed. Therefore there was a much greater risk of infection from contaminated food.
I was also advised that vomiting might be extremely dangerous since it could result in rupture at the anastomosis (The point where the pulled up stomach tube is grafted on to the esophageal stump).
For these reasons I very seldom eat out in restaurants ,would never risk 'street food' and have never set foot on either a small boat or a large ship.
I wonder what has been the experience of everyone else ?

My oesophagus split whilst vomiting in 2001 and I never had a cancer problem, but I have had severe vomiting since and there was never a chance of the surgical scars splitting in my own situation (but I still have my stomach in its normal place). But I was frightened by the thought! At one point I had Mallory Weiss tears in my stomach but the surgery still held OK. I do not think you can ever guarantee that you will never be free of the risk of food poisoning or something that would make you vomit. But I agree that trying to avoid trouble is worthwhile.
I think it is true that the absence of stomach acid has an effect in removing one of the factors that reduces infections. Dodgy food makes even the healthiest of us suffer from vomiting and diarrhoea.

I asked a surgeon about this a couple of days ago. In the initial stages after the surgery, there is a fear about the scar 'leaking' because it does take time for the joint to heal and strengthen. Vomiting might be a risk in those early weeks. It is never possible to say that vomiting can NEVER cause a problem because vomiting can cause Boerhaave's Syndrome and split a normal oesophagus. But the risk really is very small and is not something that should prevent you, at your stage, from doing what you would normally do in life.
