Son not eating

Hi.

My son is seriously underweight due to not being able to eat a dinner in the evening due to ocd thoughts and rituals.

I am so desperate to help him as a mother your natural instinct is to feed your child. Even though he is 22. His diet consist of a bagel and an omelette which is also part of the ocd.

Any ideas

Many thanks

Kaz

It's difficult because you son is an adult and medical services are likely to assume that he is fit to make his own decisions. Of course this is the case with most adults, but when they are struggling with a mental illness and refusing treatment it can be a problem for their families to get them to accept help.

If possible, make an appointment with his GP and explain the problem. I don't know if you'll get any satisfactory response, but it's worth a try. If he is malnourished then the GP should realize that your son's mental problems are harming his physical health. I don't know if sectioning is a possibility, but perhaps you could suggest it, though it is rather a drastic step.

Eating disorders are often classed with OCD and they have a lot in common. So it's possible your son's OCD could also be treated as an eating disorder.

It's a horrible situation for you to be in. Mothers never stop being mothers, even if their children are grown up!

Hi

We have had the gp in. My son had his bloods done and came back as low blood sugar. I have tried to increase what he eats when he does eat.

Still no luck from any mental health team.

He is fortunate to have someone like you to take care of him. It might be worth investigating treatment for eating disorders. However, treatment for this is still badly underfunded and many people with eating disorders have to wait for treatment. There are centres that do it, but they are too few.

Still, it might impress upon the mental health services how urgent your son's case really is. Having OCD is unpleasant enough, but when it affects someone's physical health as well treatment really does matter.

I can't say if it is an eating disorder that your son has, but it's still worth a shot.
