Advice on taking Paroxetine

Hi. I’m due to start taking Paroxetine and am wondering if anyone else has taken, or is taking the tablet, and if it has been beneficial for helping with anxiety, and or specifically with OCD?

Thanks in advance

I haven't taken this particular SSRI but they are broadly similar. I'm on sertraline and it certainly helps me a lot. I haven't had much in the way of side effects either.

SSRIs take a few weeks to start working, so don't expect instant results. Any bad side effects need to be reported, but these are rare. Once they start kicking in it's like a cloud has lifted.

SSRIs are among the safest drugs, and are usually the first port of call with OCD. Give them a go, and if you really don't get on well with the ones you've been given, another might suit you better. But I'm hoping this one will suit!

Hi Sally, thanks for replying, and for your advice.

This is my ninth drug now to try. I’ve tried a range of SSRI’s and Tricyclic antidepressants so I’m not holding out much hope for this one to be honest.

Hope you’re doing well x

The best SSRI I found is Escotalopram.

Hi Paula,

I've tried escitalopram and didn't see any difference unfortunately, but I'm glad it's worked for you and thanks so much for sharing your advice.

Hi, I've been taking Paroxetine for over 20 years now to help me manage my OCD. I came off it gradually for a short period of time (with no problems) but returned to it when life became more challenging. I am still taking is 40mg each evening.

Hello. Thanks for your reply. I’m so glad to hear it’s helped you, but sorry that things became more challenging for you. Does it make you sleepy? Did you have any side effects?

in reply to jasummers

Things are really good at the moment. To be honest I don't notice any side effects but that may be because I've been taking it for so long. I'm not sure if it makes me sleepy but my doctor prescribed it to be taken at night when I first started taking it, so I take it before going to bed, so it may be that he said to take it then as it could make me sleepy and that would help with being able to sleep when my ocd symptoms were at my worst. I have also has cognitive behavioural therapy over the years which has also helped and I now recognise that some of my checking rituals become longer when I am stressed, so this helps me recognise I'm stressed about something and take action to both manage the OCD and the things that's stressing me. My OCD was something I originally hid from people but now i'm more open about living with this and its good to help inform others about the reality of living a happy life with it and the challenges it presents (not just the popular saying of "that's a bit OCD").
