I take medication and it has really helped.. I struggle every single day and it hurts but my kids is my will to carry on and fight this..
It doesn't suit everyone, but I have found it really helpful. I have been on medication since I was 21 and it makes things easier for me. I took clomipramine for quite a few years, then moved onto sertraline about ten years ago. I take a low dose of aripiprazole, which is an antipsychotic, although I am not psychotic, because if used with sertraline or another SSRI it boosts the effects.
Don't be afraid of giving it a go. Some people have side effects, though on the whole these wear off after a few weeks, and they really do need to be taken for several weeks before they start to work properly. It does help to use CBT as well, and the drugs make it easier to tolerate the CBT. By themselves, the meds are quite effective, but not the whole answer.
Hi there. I agree with Sallyskins - definitely worth a try. Your GP will advise you which to take - SSRIs are generally best - and should start you on a low dose and monitor you frequently and carefully. If you have side effects at first, you should persist for a few weeks if your GP recommends it; if the first drug you try doesn't suit you, there are others. Try CBT/ERP as well. I'm taking fluoxetine and have hardly any side effects, and together with CBT I've seen a marked reduction of symptoms. I'm not completely well yet, but I feel so much better and massively less distressed. I was uncertain about treatment and scared of CBT before I started but I looked them up on the Cochrane website and they are the current 'gold standard.' I'm glad I tried them. Good luck!
