I have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. The arthritis I have had since the age of 50, so have had to deal with chronic pain for a long time. I had taken ibuprofen for the pain, but while it worked to help reduce the pain, I knew it wasn't good for my body. I have had insomnia for years, but the chronic pain at night from my hip and leg was making sleep almost impossible. I saw an osteopath and a rheumatologist and they had no real solution for me.
Recently, I had read more about magnesium as an aide for sleep and pain, and so decided to try it again. I had tried magnesium citrate years ago, and had not found it helped pain. This time, I read more about how many different types of magnesium there are and found that magnesium biglycinate was recommended for both pain and sleep. Lo and behold, after taking it for less than a week, I had less pain and was sleeping better. I only took the recommended amount on the bottle, so I would not take more than is suggested as I didn't want to upset the natural balance of my body. Needless to say, I am thrilled that now the pain is reduced and I can get a decent night's sleep!

thanks for this. I have read that, although there are several types of magnesium (as you say) the body will only absorb the amount of magnesium it needs, should you be deficient, regardless of the type.
My husband has taken magnesium, unsure what type but not citrate, for many years and it helps his back. I took the same product a few years ago with no effect whatsoever.
Which all goes to show that we are individuals and some experimentation is needed! My go-to for arthritic toes is glucosamine with chondroitin and indeed if I go without for more than three days am unable to walk, other than on my heels.
You are so right that people can respond very differently to the same supplement. I tried glucosamine, but it didn't seem to help. On the other hand, it really helped my arthritic old dog, so no telling for sure!
I have been taking magnesium for several years after losing my thyroid and developing psoriatic arthritis on top of it …best thing I have ever taken allows me to relax.
Thanks for letting me know what type of magnesium helps you. I take a powder of mag. biglycinate with no other added ingredients. It does not taste good, but I would rather drink it down than even use the capsules.
I take magnesium glycinate as the 3 other types I took didn't seem to work for me. It helped my insomnia somewhat and also my chronic pain from arthritis.
