Alternatives to osteoporosis meds?

Hi all— I read that they offer hormone therapy in Europe, ( even to older women in their 70’s) but not in the US. I asked an Osteo doc why and and she said because we’re not Europe! Can anyone offer any answers along with other alternatives to the current batch of meds —-as they have quite significant side effects.

I’d be asking my pharmacist as they are the medication experts

That is not true about the US. I live in the US and am 81 and take premarin. They are very cautious about prescribing HRT because of the results of the Women’s Health Initiative study. In my case because I had a hysterectomy and take only estrogen rather than the combined estrogen/progesterone, there is little to no downside. But even for those who have not had a hysterectomy, many are given HRT for osteoporosis. The alternatives all have downsides.

It may be that in your part of the US they treat women as a person with rights.. from what we see on our news channels not everywhere does this. Banning women's health centres.. what century do they live in.

Im in the US and on HRT for many years but I had hysterectomy and most likely reason for US not giving HRT to women is the risk of breast cancer at least this is what I had been told years ago.

I also thought this before i need it because of the News stories but that was 20+ years ago, Estelle is very good and it comes in the 1 pill version for those with Hysterectomies, as well as 2 for woman that have not had hysterectomies.

After a hysterectomy, estrogen is safe. But not the combined estrogen/progesterone.

Progesterone was never offered to me as additional treatment to HRT after my Hysterectomy.

Wouldn't you get more responses if you posted this question in an osteoporosis community rather than the osteoarthritis one?

Thanks—maybe so—will try—I actually am never sure I can recall my log in—so go with what is easiest.

Well your log-in will work for all the HU communities :) I just let my computer remember the log-in, but this isn't possible if you have to share a computer or use a public one.

I do not understand why there are meds passed by NICE here in UK that you cannot automatically get in the US. But have you tried to get something better on a private Script. You could look at our NICE recommendations speak with a nice Osteo in the US and get advice which is more suitable for your needs and buy it online from a UK based private Gynaecologist or Menopause specialist .Try asking on the Menopause forum you never know medical experts do sometimes use this site.Good Luck i hope you win with your search.

I live in the US and my premarin is very expensive so I get it from Canada.
