HI,
RA can lead to heart disease as I have recently found out , thankfully I do not have it but I do have Rheumatoid lung disease which in severe cases can cause fatalities.
Hope this helps
Donna
Thanks my dear
Lupus is a type of inflammatory arthritis - inflammation can affect organs as well as joints so it can kill - sometimes by causing secondary diseases and as Donna has said (and experienced) it can affect blood, lungs and heart. Tilda
Ps but this is a very rare complication I believe
Thanks my dear
I really feel that I must add here that now that we are treated more aggressively from the start and now being prescribed anti tnf's and biological drugs when the disease gets severe the likelihood of this happening is now thankfully very unlikely. We are also monitored very closely.
My consultant told me that years ago RA patients were just given aspirins and put to bed and the disease would just run riot in the patients body. Drugs for RA have come on in leaps and bounds in the last 10 -15 years, with lots of new drugs in the pipeline.
I just felt that I had to put this because I was worried that anyone reading this thread, just diagnosed with RA may become worried about it.
Hope Donna and Tilda understands and I haven't offended them. I realise that you have just answered the question asked.

No you are completely right Paula - sorry - problem dashing something off like this on iPhone and not thinking through - I just meant that by arthritis death it wouldn't mean OA for sure. But its very unlikely that this disease would kill anyone caught and treated relatively soon now I fully agree. I was thinking of an old chap up here died a few weeks ago from lung problems have had untreated RA for many years beforehand. A positive about how RA is treated now with aggressive medication I feel! Sorry should have got brain in gear before clicking send. Xx
I agree with everyone!! RA in the past cost my gran to pass away at 35 years old as there were no helpful treatments for her and she got a weak heart. BUT we do have great treatments now and its rare to hear of too many complications of the disease now.
There are people today like lady gaga who I alleged to suffer from Lupus and jshe has just had a hip op. Not wishing illness on anyone but wouldn't it be great if someone famous would admit to having RA and be an ambassador, that would really raise awareness!!!!
Actress Kathleen Turner has often publicised her RA (autobiography "Send yourself Roses" documents this) which she battled even when filming. The Fauvist, Raoul Dufy had RA and painted "La Cortison" which he gave to the drug company who made the meds that helped him.!

Max Cliffords daughter Louise has got RA. She's had it since she was six. I've often wondered why he's never done anything publicly about awareness of RA beings he knows just how awful the disease is. Perhaps it might be an idea if NRAS ask if during RA Awareness Week at the end of June.
It is on the internet about her.

This is what I believe to be her story on the NRAS case studies section
