...... just went to take my 10 tabs of mtx & found I've only got 5 left. I forgot to ask for a repeat prescription. I don't think it's a big deal but am wondering what to do for the best - any ideas would be welcome.
I won't be able to collect my prescription till next Wednesday afternoon now, they need that much time. So would you:
- take 5 now, leave it at that & go back to 10 as normal next Sunday
-take 5 now & another 5 next Wednesday
- leave today (my normal mtx day) and wait until Wednesday to take all 10 (which would only leave another 4 days till the next dose .....)
I'm inclined just to take 5 now & not bother about topping up ..... it's not flipping working all that well anymore anyway!
If that had happened to me I'd collect the prescription on Wednesday and take the full dose then. The week after I'd continue on your normal day, in your case Sunday
Hope this helps, Christine
My surgery will do emergency prescriptions on the same day, so may be worth talking to them tomorrow. I think you can take the MTX up to 48 hours later than normal, so you should be OK and then continue as before. Virge
Hi , personally i would keep to my day and have the 5 and ask for an emergency prescription from the chemist for the other 5 tomorrow - or does your gp do telephone consultations? you could phone and ask the receptionists the best way to get the script the quickest. try not to worry though. i have decided that the odd missed pill that i've forgotten won't send the whole regime off kilter, afterall the drugs are slow acting? or maybe i am niave? anyway hope you get sorted - good luck and take care
The surgery Pharmacists are quite scary .... but you've given me the backbone to phone up tomorrow & ask for a quick turnaround, I think. (Can you give me some new knees next?)
You will be able to get an emergency one, I had to do it. You can have my knees they are bloody useless and have considered chopping them off. Would help the weight loss as well. Only joking
Not a wally, just have other things in your life than pesky yellow tablets. Personally I don't think a good idea to take the full dose of MTX more frequently than 7 days apart, so would favour terrorising a receptionist first thing tomorrow and just moving MTX to Mondays. Failing that then I'm with your gut instinct, ie take the 5 you have and miss the rest 'till next time. It's your subconscious joining Tilda on her MTX holiday. Or, as others have said you can at a pinch spread dose out over 24 hours or so. But either way, a smaller dose for a week isn't going to turn the world on it's axis, and far better that than taking too many which is a real no-no. polly
pharmacys should oblige in times of emergency. top tips ! one go to normal chemist, ideal if it is at gp surgery as they can confirm dose with gp, dont experiment by splitting dose could very well cause problems i wouldnt recommend this x
dose should always be taken same Days each week it is possible to either miss a dose completely or move by up to two days but this will then become your methotrexate
day. I used to take mine on a friday, but if you arent orgaised ,we have a lot of tablets to remember , worse when not v well ,mon or tue? might be a safer day? cos you could check stock on thur/ fri and re-order xx
I'd take 5 today and ask for emergency script tomorrow. if u can't get any tomorrow wait 'til next sunday,
missing 5 is normally ok now & then but check with your gp. - I'm on anti-biotics so gp said miss mtx this week, and I'm on 12.5! [taken sat & sun].
regards,
sandra.
I agree with Polly and Alison - its not a good idea to top up or narrow the gap - either take five today or skip and change your day to whenever you can get new batch.
I keep meaning to suggest to you that if you feel the MTX isn't working it might be a good idea if you do as Polly and I have done and switch to injectable MTX which is significantly more effective I'm reliably informed? I know you start Sulpha soon too and that will be more pills to swallow and more to remember for you. Its much easier to remember to inject and might make a much more effective combination for you in tackling your RA? X

Thanks, I will ask about this - not particularly squeamish about needles but then the fact of injecting does seem like serious stuff, somehow .... thanks though. x

Yes it is serious but then if you are going to take serious drugs then you want the most effective route I feel? X
More food for thought, thanks everyone! Now I'm veering towards taking the 5 & leaving it be till next Sunday's normal dose ....... I've been taking these pills for nearly 2 years now, always very regular before, so I doubt if missing half a dose just this once would matter too much. xx
I did the same as you a few months ago - I called NHS direct but in the time it took for them to come back to me I'd also phoned a supermarket pharmacy that was open late (11pm?). They said if I took my repeat prescription form and the remaining tablets I had with me, they would issue an emergency prescription there and then to make up the full dose - which they did. Not sure they'd be open at this time of night on a Sunday but you could always try your local hospital as they also have to have access to medicines 24hours a day.
I've taken the 5 now but it's useful to know this for another time. Everything's always so complicated but this site is just so good for instant info. & advice. Thank you! x
