Steroid in knee has made it worse!? Never happened before...

Just wondered if anyone else has had this happen.

I have had countless knee jabs, that have always given instant relief, but today it was very uncomfortable whilst having it done, so felt sore after & has got a lot worse since, in total agony now, just taken a diclofenac but don't hold much hope.

The only thing I can think of that was different today is that it didn't get aspirated before as it wasn't swollen, just a bit puffy.

I wish I hadn't bothered now :(

Hi Tiasteph, I too have had many joint injections in the past, like you some gave me almost instant relief. In some cases though they either didn't work or they felt like it made the pain worse. I have also had times when I've been in even more pain than before and even given the helpline a call because it was so bad. I did have fluid draw from my knee once and that was extremely painful during and after the procedure for a few days. Usually though given a few days of rest it settles all i can do is hope it settles for you in a day or so, nothing worse than going through that and feeling like you have wasted your time.

Take care and I hope things settle down for you.

Poor you - hope it settles down soon. I had a jab in my foot once that was very sore - I think it was because I didn't rest it after the - I'd parked my car in the car park in town rather than at the hospital as I wasn't expecting our friend S to do anything but he gave me a jab - of course then I had to walk to the car and by the time I got home it hurt so much I thought I might throw up - very unpleasant but it did go away with rest, the next day I was fine.

Feel better. xx

Thanks hun, just not had this happen with knees so thought I'd ask. He normally hits the place spot on but had to wiggle about a bit :( today.

One in my wrist was like yours, I didn't even get to the lift, so went back to ask why the hell I was in sheer agony, but I was told it may have caught a nerve.

Off to bed now, see what tomorrow brings xx

Hi Steph, hope your knee settles down. I have had injections into my shoulders which have worked well. Once or twice my Rheumy has had to drawn off fluid beforehand but not suffered any ill effects. My normal steroid injection when I need it, is in the backside. Strangely enough a better result when injected on the right hand side rather than the left. Can't work that one out at all! Take it easy. Perhaps try a cold pack? Might give some relief. LavendarLady x

Hi LL

thank you, bit stiff this morning but the pain has gone right down…thankfully!

How odd is that, right being better to left, lol! Although my right side joints are worse than my left, thought it may be cause I'm right handed & had car accident on right knee, but who knows. xx

hope you fel better soon xx

Hi Alison

thanks you hun…hope your ok xx

Hi Steph

My knees are my worse joints at the moment and three weeks ago experienced a ruptured synovium of the right knee. The pain from my knee and down the back of my leg was excrutiating. Initially they thought it might be a DVT but a vascular scan proved otherwise.

Anyway I digress! As a result of diagnosis my rheum consultant drained both knees, loads of fluid in the right one despite the fact there was even more in my leg! She then injected both knees with steroid. The right knee was very painful, although the aspiration and subsequent was in itself pain free. From what I understand the nerves can be affected both by the pressure of the fluid and the procedure itself. It does sound as though perhaps a nerve was just touched and set of a reaction on this occasion.

Do be careful with hot/cold packs, I'm sure you already know this but it's wrapped cold packs for swollen painful joints and hot/warm packs for joint pain with no swelling. No more than 10 minutes a time!

Pleased to hear things feel better this morning Steph but don't forget to rest! 48 hours feet up for lower limbs :)

Take care

Hi Lyn

thank you. Gosh you have been bad :( I once had a burst baker cyst, mimicked a dvt, so sore!

Hope you are feeling a lot better now x

I have just noticed a huge bruise on the other side from where he went in, this could explain it somewhat. Never had that before.

Yes I shall be resting…I know the drill :) xxx

Hia, I have had the same experience, the last time i got my knee injected with steriod, they couldnt get the fluid out, had 3 attempts, but they wouldnt try a 4th time, so just put a steriod in it. Later that evening i was in the worse agony in my knee i have ever experienced, i felt sick with the pain, even my strong pain killers wouldnt take it away. When i asked nurse next day, she said the steriod sometimes has that effect and can cause it to go worse just for a short time.. I do hope you feel better soon, and you have been able to sleep with it..
