Hi Jaqi1,

Yes indeed when I started on methotrexate I had a period for 27days continuously. I have no history of heavy bleeding either. My consultant at the time suggested that it wasn't a 'recognised' side effect of mtx so was probably my age!!!!! as you can imagine I wasn't impressed at 43..... My GP suggested a medication to stop the bleeding which was very effective,

however if you have a history of clots or stroke it isn't advisable. I haven't had any other incidences of heavy prolonged periods and I have become very regular so hang on in there and seek medical advice sooner rather that later, hope all goes well

thanks for your answer lucy. it is very scarey when you bleed for so long xx

Hi Jaqi,

I was on the pill (Loestrin) when I first started MTX, within a few weeks I started spotting and then had a very long period - couple weeks. This suggested my pill was not working so I decided to stop taking it as felt taking so many other pills, it was one additional I didn't need especially if I didn't fully trust it was working.

Over the past 6 months my periods have become more and more erratic, I could always practically time my watch by them and now, they can be 6 weeks apart.

The doctor said wasn't MTX but I believe it is such a strong pill, it can have different effects on different people. If nothing else the stress of having RA and the tablets we take on the body all add up.

X

Oh sorry should have said - I'm 28 x

Hi Jaqi,

I started on MTX last year and my cycle went from being regular 28-29 days to all over the place and that is how it still is. I haven't had bleeding for 2 weeks like you (poor thing - I really sympathise and hope it improves) but I don't have any idea when I am due on now. When I started MTX, I went 9 weeks without a period but it has been anything from 5 - 13 weeks since! I have spoken to my nurse and my consultant about it, the nurse said it could be the menopause (I'm 46) but my consultant said it was more than likely the MTX as it coincided with the commencement of MTX. As Jen says, it is such a strong pill and affects us all in different ways. I would speak to your GP, nurse or consultant for peace of mind at least and I hope you feel better soon. Mags xx
