mend it! Do you know if it’s the aorta or the valve? Both can be repaired and replaced

I think a leaky value.

Hi - yes as Helixhelix has said both can be operated on

As far as the aortic valve is concerned… the valve can be replaced . This operation is carried out quite routinely these days and the success rate is very high

This procedure is always carried out by an experienced surgeon/ team

This operation is performed when the aortic valve either becomes leaky or calcified and your heart,s effectiveness becomes compromised

There are two methods that are effective…

1. Requiring open heart surgery where the actual damaged valve is removed, and a new valve (mechanical or biological) is sewn in place.

2.TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation):

A less invasive procedure where a new valve is placed inside the old one using a catheter inserted into a blood vessel.

It doesn't require open-heart surgery or a heart-lung machine, making it suitable for older or frail patients

However all this depends on your actual symptoms - severity and you will be advised and by your cardiac consultant and team members .

Very often patients are monitored over a period of time before any surgical intervention is necessary

My advice is for you to speak directly with the consultant/ nurse specialist (who you have ? already seen) to get a true picture of your individual circumstances and do not jump to any conclusions

Hi. I had a calcified heart valve in April 2023. It was replaced and took me quite few months to get over as I ended up with fluid on my lungs. But once that all cleared I was so much better. Plus I could then breath. It was my breathing that made me see my GP. Operations are done in London nothing done like that in Kent where I live. So I was in kings for 3 weeks. But it’s all good now. Good luck with your op
