A quick question if I may please. Has anyone had or got hip bursitis? My symptoms are like burn/pins and needles on area outside of hips and almost around the whole of my pelvis and when I sit , like tingling. I’ve had these symptoms before, I notice that I’m more tired than usual when I’ve had it. Bloods ok no inflammation ( had them yesterday) . Not sure if flare but no other symptoms other than fatigue.
Any ideas / suggestions to help? How on earth do you all stay positive. I try thinking it’ll pass like last time but it really drags me down 😔
thanks you lovely bunch 🤗

I have it hip bursitis - I had a lot of pain in my right hip years ago and figured that it was - I think I looked up exercises to see what I could do to sort it out because it eventually disappeared.
Then in 2021 I had an accident and fractured my sacrum and the MRI scan I had to find out what was wrong - private MRI of course not a chance on the NHS especially with all the covid business and hospitals and GPs locking down - showed the sacral fracture plus mild osteoarthritis and trochanteric bursitis in my right hip years- so my suspicions were correct.
I haven’t done anything really for it - I’ve had a lot of pain in that area for so long I’ve just got used to it - I’ve been told I could have a steroid injection but from what I’ve read people seem to need them to be repeated, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t and I think they hurt so I haven’t bothered.
My bursitis is a burning pain right on my hip mostly when I lie directly on it at night so I try not to do that and that definitely helps.
Could your pins and needles be sciatica? That can be agony and they give you the feeling of pins and needles and that can be there pretty much all the time.
I have had a lot of long term problems with my spine (since the late 1980s,) eventually back then when the sciatica caused by herniated discs got so bad - it went from from my right hip right down my leg and into my right toes - I knew I was washing my leg in the shower but I couldn’t actually feel it! I used to have to stop the car if we went on a long journey and look for something I could hang from to stretch my spine.
Anyway, my GP didn’t take it seriously at all - he sniggered as he wrote ‘Pain in right buttock’ on the X-ray form - 🤣 then apologised next time he saw me because he had discovered the herniated discs.
At that point I saw a consultant and had a couple of epidural steroid injections which kept things at bay until I had the accident in 2021 and fractured my sacrum. I’ve now got osteoporosis as well as the osteoarthritis, the bursitis and sero negative inflammatory arthritis.
I do two, one hour Pilates sessions every week which is more or less gentle stretches and balance work and I walk for about an hour most days. Moving helps a lot. As does Volterol gel and a couple of paracetamol or if my body is feeling particularly bad I’ll take ibuprofen which I try not to.
If you haven’t seen someone about it to find out exactly what is going on and why, I think it would be worth doing that. For me I think knowing exactly what is causing my pain is the reason I can cope with it.
Hi, HappyD34. It’s an annoying part of RA & I’ve been having hip bursitis for a few weeks. I’ve been taking a combination of Paracetamol, Codeine & Ibuprofen-alternating every 6-8 hrs. It bothers me more at night. I’ve been downloading hip exercises that do help to relieve it.
Hi fruit and nut. Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your accident . Sounds like you were getting to grips and then wham , off it goes. I’ve spoken to rheumy nurse, she is going to check with consultant to see if mri or ultrasound is needed. It seems to come when I have little ( but often) flares. 4.5 months into methotrexate, , last increase 5 weeks to max 25mg but I see no improvement 😒. Thank good I’ve got appointment early April 🙏. All the best xx
I had had Bursitis for at least ten years. It causes burning in the inside as well as the outside of your hips. The groin area is not as problematic. The outer hips makes sleeping very difficult. There is burning , numbness and varying degrees of inflammation.
As difficult as it maybe, exercise is the best thing. It helps retain mobility and maintain weight which will reduce pain. Wish I had better news.
Mine started following a hip replacement in 2015. Had various therapies including jabs. Most of the time I'm not aware of it but it hurts if I walk too far. Push for following this through.
I have bursitis in both hips and it’s been hell. Sometimes I can’t even bare my clothes next to my hip joint it’s so painful. Saw rheumy about it last October and he gave me a sheet of exercises to do which didn’t help at all just made it worse (but as they are very inflamed that’s not surprising) I did find putting ice on them helped a lot and found some gentle exercises from the USA on YouTube helpful. I’m having a steroid injection in the left one next week at rheumy clinic I know it’s not going to be comfortable once the lidocaine wears off but hoping after a few days it will ease it. Going forward once the inflammation has reduced I will do the exercises more to strengthen the joint and hopefully it won’t bother me so much again. Good luck but definitely get it checked by your rheumy.
I’ve had troncheric bursitis for many years, had several injections in it - they bl***y hurt! I also have fused SI joints which don’t help. The one thing that has helped is a foam topper on our bed, sleep was a nightmare before. I bought one that was a good 1 1/2 inch deep from Amazon a few years ago.
I have had problems on and off with bursitis in hips over the last 7 years. Heat pads and painkillers certainly help but if it persists I have found that a steroid injection clears it at least for several months and usually longer.
Oh my I have this! Its dreadful! Mine goes from my right buttock and goes into my groin, top of femoral head feels like there's a bump there and hurts, then it goes down the outer side of my thigh to my knee and down to my ankle/foot. Wondering whether to have a steroid jab. But that worries me that I'll go through that and it won't work. I try to do the stretches for it but they just make it worse. I'm at a loss what you do. I also have herniated discs. I have back excercises from a physio but they help my back but hurt my hip. Catch 22! Don't see my rheumy until June so trying to hold out until then.
I’ve had bursitis in my rt hip for 35 yrs, the pain is all the buttock area and down my leg to my knee, tried everything, steroids, exercises etc but it hasn’t make any long term changes. Haven’t slept on my left side for 35 yrs either. Invested in a mammoth expensive mattress and sleep a lot better now than before it, like sleeping on a cloud but not on my left. Just got used to it, I take large doses of pain killers,(I anlso have back and spinal issues along with my feet) anti inflammatories and see a very well qualified sports massage therapist who also practices acupuncture and it keeps me going. Thank goodness for my PIP as it’s all private.
Yes Inhave had this, had a couple of steroid injections which did work almost immediately. Eventually had a replacement hip due to osteoarthritis. Very successful.
Not had any problems with bursitis for a while now.
Yes i have had hip bursitis, i found the steroid somewhat painful for a day or so but nothing compared to the bursitis pain, how wonderful it was to be pain free for quite a few months
I had it in both hips. Went & got steroid shots. It did the trick…but wait a couple 3 days for it to be better. And try not to lay on them for awhile (your side) I was doing a lot of shoveling, so try not to be doing anything repetitive.
