Folic acid question

I've just had a thought about my folic acid. I have mild covid and my rheumy nurse told me to stop mtx for 2 weeks. I forgot to ask if I should continue taking the folic acid daily or is there no need to take it if I'm not taking mtx.Does anyone have experience of this please?

I was always told to continue the folic acid, when I stop MTX for short periods, like when on antibiotics or getting vaccine

Thanks, I will continue with mine then. I was about to take it, then it just occurred to me perhaps I should check. I won't bother the rheumy nurses, I'm sure they are busy enough!I know you have lots of experience and a medical background. Your posts are always very useful

Hi Runrig,

My daughter had her op and is now recovering. She is desperate to start her RA meds again. MTX tablets and Enbrel injections. I think she can start her MTX tablets 7 days afer OP and Enbrel 14 days. It is really hard to get hold of the Rheumy team, but I think the above may be ok, would you happen to know please? Thanks

Sorry, I wouldn’t like to say. A lot depends on healing and the surgeons views on how the healing is going. Restarting to early can risk it getting infected. Have you tried ringing the secretary, they are usually good at speaking to the consultant and getting back to you.

The Rheumatologist's Secretary called today to say 7 days after op is fine for MTX. No mention if only healed???

That's a good point . I've always stopped mtx when I've had covid jabs , but it never occurred to me to stop the folic acid . So I've always continued to take it .

I was prescribed Folic acid a while before I started MTX so I carry on.

Thanks for letting me know. I'd never heard of having it before mtx! My usual mtx dose is on a Saturday, so I will take my folic acid today

I was on Folic acid 7 days a week because of low folate levels and had to drop to 6 days when I started MTX (every day except Sunday when I take MTX).

I have co-vid, just tested positive must have brought it back off holiday on the plane , I won’t take MTX this week and I only take folic acid the day after MTX jab . I have always stopped folic acid if I don’t take MTX always been ok for me , but we are all different and if you have a folate issue then defo stay on it even when not taking MTX . 👍

I started getting just general cold symptoms and thought nothing of it , but now I’m back my temp has gone through the roof and my blood oxygen levels have dropped . Not feeling good , I’m told it’s doing the rounds again for this summer . 😩

I thought I had hay fever at first, mainly a blocked nose, then realised it was getting worse. It seems to be getting better now though🤞. Take care, I hope you feel better soon.

I don't understand why people are stopping MTX when they are having a covid jab or indeed covid itself. I have had all the recommended jabs ( got to be 6 or 7 now ) along with positive for covid a couple of times and have never stopped taking any of my medication and had no issues.
