Look up Morton’s Nueroma, it might be something like that. That’s what I had and it was operated on. Very minor surgery as insoles never helped. But I only had in one foot.
You can have injections in the area, I was told sometimes work, sometimes don’t. But I went for surgery even then it can regrow. It’s a bummer but treatable. If you’re in the UK try wide toed shoes with a small heel. Avoid soft shoes like Sketchers as they don’t support the area. It’s like walking on a pebble agony!,, I’m sorry you’ve got such pain, it’s so debilitating when it could be treated efficiently. If you can afford it I’d suggest see a surgeon not a podiatrist. Then see if he knows a good podiatrist if it isn’t as he can do injections by ultrasound into area. Not all podiatrists can do that. Good luck. X
Oh JenniferBut I feel your pain! I am also on the waiting list for a podiatry appointment. My pain is definitely caused by RA as it gets much worse with flares. The balls of my feet and big toes are very painful. Then during a flare it feels like I'm walking with all my toes broken 😔I've no idea how long it will take to get an appointment but I'm hoping that if I can get my disease under better control, they will settle down anyway. Good luck and let us know how you go on. x
You could always ask around any friends who have a good chiropodist. They can often help ease the pain before you actually get a clinical consultation.
You could be waiting a long time for an NHS appointments and pods are leaving in droves and setting up in private practice. A podiatrist as opposed to a foot health practitioner will be highly qualified in MSK and be able to help you. Book a consultation and see what they propose and hopefully you’ll be out of pain much quicker.
I would contact a private podiatrist. I had similar pain, feeling like I was walking in broken toes. I paid £30 for an appointment in a couple of days, and they made me a device to put toes in the correct position, made such a difference, although I did need surgery 3 weeks ago to o lengthen tendons and fuse toes straight.
I am very lucky in that we have a dedicated Rheumatology Podiatry department at our group of hospitals. They can diagnose, make personalised insoles and prescribe as and when needed. I have been asked when I would like the next appointment, would I like more free insoles or is there anything they can do for me.
My GP refered me to NHS podiatry. I have regular appointments...every 6 weeks at the minute. They shave callouses on the balls of my feet and cut my toenails. My callouses need to be checked regularly as they're at risk from infection and ulcerating.
Fitting you with orthotic insoles may help as they do with me.
orthotic insoles completely changed my foot pain. I still have pain but it’s relieved a great deal now. I was referred by my rheumy, I don’t know if a GP can refer you?
Thanks 🙏👍 I don't need a go referral, there is a rebate under the chronic health condition GP management plan of 59 dollars but I couldn't be bothered as it costs 25 to see GP anyway. I think I will def book podiatry for next week, worth a try. You give me hope!
I have RA in both big toe joints, have experienced bursitis following a leg injury that required limping and have developed Enthetitis following the injury as well, the RA is chronic, established 1979 but the injury that’s tipped the balance was in Oct 2020 and went untreated due to the pandemic.
Subsequently I was told I should have been none weight baring on that leg for 8-12 weeks. ( can’t use crutches any way as RA in wrists, shoulders and elbows prevents ).
The new injury and increase in RA in the ball joint has become excruciating. I have a fitting for my first orthotics on Tuesday . The clinician said if after a year no relief is apparent they would consider a guided steroid injection. I use an ankle brace to support the foot injury and volterol 2%+ but nothing much helps the RA in the ball joint so far…. I have my hopes pinned on the orthotics.
I have podiatry. Referral by physio after I asked for it. Exercises given and insoles which I am still getting used too didn't realise have to build up time wearing them so wore them for long time caused pain. Was told to purchase a stretch board to stretch achilles and referral to surgeon for Mortons neuroma was made. Told to buy rocker shoes all seem expensive and look like trainers so not got them yet. Have further appointments.
I went to a podiatrist a few years back because of knee pain and she made me insoles. They really made a difference and it wasn't ridiculous cost wise. She really listened and took her time. I'm still using the insoles so it's definitely something I'd recommend
As you are in OZ the method is different to UKbut the treatments are similar . Podiatry has to be paid for now in Uk unless you have had an operation. I have had foot arthritis for years , I have tried acupuncture , insoles , good fitting shoes, gym exercises, wax foot bath, painkillers, herbal potions , always wear socks even in bed, wrap wheat bags round feet but to name a few . Do you have any distorted toes etc which could indicate arthritis. Inflammation can be improved with NAISDs , ibuprofen and nuerofen. Rubs and gels often include anti inflammatory ingredients. One I have not tried is lasar treatment which was recommended by Physio but could not be admlnistered without a Drs letter to confirm it was safe for me to be treated. Hope these options include something that might work for you. Oh and remember good strong shoes help and short walks building up to longer ones. Good luck.
Hi there, I think it’s worth trying. I was getting foot pain due to the change in my walking due to bad knees which led to corns and build up of hard skin increasing discomfort. I went to a podiatrist and I was able to walk without discomfort in my feet, I now go every 2 months and they also helped with recommendations for better supporting shoes. I know our symptoms are different but it’s definitely worth a go
Well it certainly was worth a go. I went today and found out one leg is longer than the other and I am pronating very badly. Relief may be on the way!!
my feet hurt worse when I have fluid buildup. I take Hydrochlorothiazide for at least three days when it gets bad. That usually helps but lately it’s getting worse and peeing more with back pain has me worried it may be kidney problems. I’m calling for nurse practitioner tomorrow morning to check it out.
I’m in aus too and hunted for a podiatrist with a specific interest in arthritis. Have only had one visit and I absolutely love talking to her and getting her opinion and help. She’s up to date with RA and osteoarthritis ❤️
Was getting sick of seeing people who know less than we do about our conditions.
I’m getting more fussy as to who I see for things now.
