Hi folks, for those who have retired due to ill health is it possible to do say 10hrs a week of work to help with living expenses? Any experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I retired due to ill health and I work part time and have done so for many years. Speak to your provider as they can answer that question. It would depend on other benefits you are claiming whether it would affect those, worth taking some advice on.

I had to retire due to ill health when I was 52. I’d had a severe stroke, and was awarded tier 1, as they didn’t know how well I’d recover. It was upgraded to tier 2 3 yrs later. With tier 1 I could do any job other than the one I was doing. With tier 2 it’s saying your unable to undertake regular employment. If you were to undertake work at tier 2 it can impact your pension.

it depends on the terms of your (presumably occupational) pension. I am not allowed to work. I retired from the University Superannuation Scheme. They kindly made my pension up to what it would have been if I had retired when 66. I suspect RA was in their automatic enhancement qualifying list. Your pension provider will advise. Might be worth look at their website.

It depends on the terms of your pension. Speak to your pension provider. I took ill health retirement at 36, my pension scheme had two tiers, I got tier one which means I can work (but not in my original profession) without affecting my pension, tier two would mean I couldn’t work at all without it affecting my pension.

I had to retire early at 50. I came ESA.It became obvious I couldn’t work so was told to claim PIPS too.You can’t work on ESA but you can with PIPS.hope that helps

I thought you could possibly (with their knowledge) work up to 16 hours/£167 a week on ESA ?

It depends on your pension scheme so the best thing to do is ask your provider. In my case I could work as many hours as I liked but not earn more than my original salary by adding the pension to the new salary. If your on benefits then you’d need to declare any earnings even if it doesn’t affect them.
