Seeking a good travel insurance company for rheumatoid arthritis

RobbieM profile image
40 Replies

Just wondered if anyone has any advise on travel companies they have used that covers rheumatoid arthritis.

Also I noticed that for Corona virus cover you have to be up to date with COVID vaccines and unfortunately I missed the spring booster so any advise for cover would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Aviva have accepted RA for me no problem at all

Why do you need cover for RA.Just interested as I'm travelling next week and haven't added my arthritis as its hugely expensive. Wonder what could go wrong that you would need cover?

RobbieM profile image
RobbieM in reply to Cheylann

Because if I contract COVID while I am away I need to be covered as we're autoimmune if I'm not covered for COVID the medical bills in the US are astronomical

Cheylann profile image
Cheylann in reply to RobbieM

What meds do you take that make you autoimmune and also have you had covid yet? For most it's like a bad cold. Unpleasant yes, but don't require hospital treatment.

RobbieM profile image
RobbieM in reply to Cheylann

I've had it and was hospitalised so would prefer of I get it again abroad to be covered. I take a biological drug

Cheylann profile image
Cheylann in reply to RobbieM

Oh sorry you got it so badly.I always use staysure.

GranAmie profile image

Some biologics put you in the high risk {CEV} category. I use Staysure and they've been quite efficient in the past. If you missed the spring booster talk to your GP re getting autumn booster ASAP??

It’s just with any policy you are supposed to declare any existing medical conditions that’s all. If you don’t I’m not sure if it voids the whole policy?

RobbieM profile image
RobbieM in reply to AW600

If you haven't had all your vaccines for COVID you are not covered if you contract COVID while on holiday. I missed the spring one hence my query

Cheylann profile image
Cheylann in reply to AW600

Only if they find out that your condition caused the covid or whatever illness you get.I wouldn't even thin to declare my arthritis as it doesn't make me more vulnerable to any illness.

Tisboo profile image
Tisboo in reply to Cheylann

I’d think again if I were you

Your policy will be void if you don’t declare certain pre existing medical conditions

KittyJ profile image
KittyJ in reply to Cheylann

Because if you were taken ill and hadn’t declared an existing health problem you wouldn’t be covered ie you were hospitalised with a severe infection and you hadn’t declared your RA and meds, but f they can get out of paying out they will and that’d be costly to you. You might as well not buy insurance ( a relative had this happen to them, they now owe thousands)

AW600 profile image
AW600 in reply to KittyJ

Exactly, it’s just not worth being truthful from the start. I would rather pay more for insurance than be stuck with a potentially huge bill if anything went wrong whilst away

Nyreedw profile image
Nyreedw in reply to Cheylann

If you don't declare they won't pay out if you need it.

If you don't disclose your med conditions no travel insurance will pay up for anything, even nonRA probs - you give tem a get out by not declaring a condition !!

I am interested to see who other people use as well. I have over 15 conditions and was using Allclear.

Spent over an hour trying to renew only to be told at the end that my policy for hubbie and me had doubled from £250 for a years multi trip Uk and Channel Islands to £500😳

I semi politely said no thanks!

I hope you have better luck RobbieM

try staysure; My husband has many med probs, I have RA, and staysure was 45% cheaper than all clear - they also were fairly efficient when gastric probs appeared in Tenerife.

I always use just travel it’s like a price comparison site you just put in all your conditions etc and it then gives you options from several companies. We usually pick one we’ve heard of but a recent cruise for myself and hubby with the top cover including extra baggage cover cost us less than £50 for both. I’m sure there are others but worth a try.

Due to go on cruise in October and was recommended to use Insure and Go. Time will tell but the price for me and my RA was £120 for two weeks which included all the cruise stuff (like missing the ship…….). By the time you’ve mentioned all the pills you swallow the price just climbs.

I thinks some of these insurance companies should be called ‘Ha, Ha, You Must Be Bloody Joking’ as they who laugh last…………😄

I just got annual European cover for me and my husband with admiral via a comparison site. That’s with my RA, cancer last year, asthma. Husband with blood pressure and a few other things. £180 for us both. Last year just after I’d finished my cancer treatment it was £500.

Hi I’m going away in September and I’ve used a company called no limit’s insurance.com they were very reasonable.

I'm just going to do Post Office over 50's which covers chronic illnesses. No complaints so far.

Haha. Interestingly I bought some cover just yesterday 😅😅

I bought cover yesterday for a 38 day trip to Barbados and Dutch Antilles. (Includes USA).

First quote was over £2000 😅😅😅😅. Best quote was £224 with Love It Cover It. A specialist broker. Beat Allclear and Staysure. I declare RA and Hypertension. 2 meds for RA and 1 for HT and previous depression and asthma. No hospital admissions, no joint replacements and no motility aids.

Try comparison site payingtoomuch.com

We paid £56 ,last year, with Zurich for Tunisia, I have RA, OA with hip replacement and Osteoporosis and my partner has Myasthenia Gravis. The MG bumped it up more. Staysure wanted £200.

Have you found age has made a huge difference?

I was asked for £1200 for a one year, 2 people (married) U.S.A. covered policy.

I have RA and hubby has Barrett’s.

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to Daisy70

Yes Age does up all sorts of insurance…so I was pleasantly surprised at 80+ to be offered an annual European policy with Staysure for £325….didn’t include cruising though as that always ups the price. So you being asked for £600 each does sound a bit over the top.

I have insured with them for years & had one big claim after ending up in hospital in the US..…I don’t know if being a long term customer had any effect on the price….but search around ……there are some decent reasonably priced policies out there, but you have to read the small print as there are some horrors out there too.

Never used a specialist insurance, just usual policy and declared RA. Last policy was £26 with Explorer Insure.

I always use Insure and Go without problems. I declare my RA and then have to answer a few online ?s

I got quoted 3,000,for America , can't remember who with. It's a real pain as I have scleroderma,COPD and recently had a hip replacement, following a fall.It takes ages to answer the questions.

And really depressing.

Given up the idea of ever travelling outside Europe again
