Rheumatoid arthritis fluid in knee

Hey I have rheumatoid arthritis and I was having knee pain and I went to doctors today and I have fluid in my knee is this a common thing? If so how does this happen and what should I do to try and prevent this?

The first year after diagnosis I still had active inflammation and had to have fluid taken out of my knees a number of times.

Keeping the disease well controlled should stop it happening.

Hi I have knee pain last few days can you tell if you have fluid. Have sharp pain occasionally on walking or bending can't see any swelling.

Does it feel squishy behind the knee?

Thanks for replying not sure really as never felt behind there before ha . Maybe "just" inflammation will add it to my list for physio in January. I usually go with something different for her she will have difficulty getting rid of me...

Hi , I have fluid on my knee recently had MRI scan been told I have a torn meniscus, osteoarthritis , and rheumatoid , waiting to see orthopaedic surgeon, this has gone on for a while and has got worse , cold pack help ease pain 👍

I'm the same...saw an orthopedic surgeon a couple of years ago, he said they don't do anything for meniscus tear nowadays as it makes osteoarthritis worse 🙄 let me know if yours says different please. 🌹

The knee surgeon said put up with it as long as you can. Ops for new knees can end up being worse than what you've got, he said. ( I've got RA and similar problems.)

When my knee swelled up the Rheumatologist gave me an injection which worked very well.

Hello Moulinr, when my RA was active/uncontrolled I used to have fluid in my knees fairly often and I also had it once or twice after being put on biologics (which pretty much stopped my symptoms) but not for many years now. My rheumy usually drained it and injected steroids into the knee(s). I haven't had that problem for many years now though. Hope this helps! xx

I constantly have fluid in my knees and ankles too especially when the weather is humid but can get it in the winter too. My RA is active so that doesn’t help but in the past they were going to drain fluid off and give me a steroid in the knees but appointment took six weeks and it was better by then but still had the injection.

My knees do this from time to time how the body tries to heal the area, but it's not too helpful eh?Along with pain relief, ice packs, light exercise , the specialist nurse arrange for me to have a steroid injection in it. Painful but really helped.

Thank you so much everyone for their comments! I did get the cortisone injection in it and hopefully that will ease it a bit

hi it’s many years since I had a knee replacement before then I went back and forth to the orthopedic clinic for 5 years every 4 months I got a steroid injection into my knee. The first year it was a great success but the more injections you get you get it’s no good the injection is doing more harm than good in the end I had to have a knee replacement normally you wouldn’t have to wait so long for an opp I had to wait for an alternative to anaesthetic it’s been worth it. 🐾
