Mortons Neuroma

Hi All

I'm having a guided by ultrasound steroid injection for neuroma in my foot. Really not looking forward to this but hopefully it will help.

Can I just ask what footwear I should wear to the procedure and how well will I be able to walk afterwards? I've been told I can't drive for 6 hours but i think that is more due to potential reactions to the steroids rather than the injection itself.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

TIA

Sarah

I’m sure you are already wearing sensible shoes. Trainer type will be fine. I think they say you can’t drive in case of numbness. Not had a problem with that myself for this particular procedure. I walked just fine after. Good luck. I’ve had a few over the years. Made a big difference.

my sister had this done and she had almost immediate relief. She said it was painless. She was told to have orthotics made and it’s made such a difference

I have had steroid injections in my big toe joint more than once. Normal comfortable shoes will be fine. I find that for the first few hours everything is fine, but after that sometimes it swells up, other times it hasn't. Guided is much better as they will make sure that the steroid goes exactly where it should do.

Some clinicians also put a local anaesthetic in at the same time or just before, and that is what can cause your foot to go numb.

Well I’ve worn normal shoes twice no issues and it really doesn’t hurt at all. But can the next day. Just wear sensible trainers and try not to worry. I’ve walked away and never given it any further thoughts even after surgery. I’ve never driven for a couple of days because it’s a strange feeling and rested my foot but walked without problems.

When I had the injections( have had them twice now) I wore flat shoes. Was allowed to walk out of hospital and then advised to rest and stay off feet for as much as possible for a couple of days to allow injection to settle and be more effective. Hope this helps

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll wear my walking shoes (big toe box, thick soles). I've booked the day of the injection off work, I may look at the next day too.

Thank you all.

I don’t think what shoes you wear makes any difference….you are advised not to drive & to keep off your feet for a while because the pressure of pushing on foot pedals like clutch/ brake/accelerator could push the steroid all over the place in your foot when it needs to stay where it’s injected.

Hope it works for you….I have had neuromas in both feet removed & injected…the surgery worked for a while….but they returned & although some people find them useful, I found the injections a waste of time. Also my health authority won’t sanction guided injections if you have already had surgery, I have been offered further surgery, but it’s so disruptive not being able to drive…even with an automatic if it’s your right foot ….I think I couldn’t drive for about a month.

I now find using an electric foot massager seems to jiggle (technical term )😀the neuromas around & it does give some relief…but I have decided against any further treatment for now.

Good Luck…hope your injections are a success.
