Morton’s neuroma

Good evening,

I have been diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma this evening. I have RA but am fortunate enough to be well enough to run 5k three or four times a week. I run because it helps me physically but also mentally. I’m VERY reluctant to reduce or stop :-( Unfortunately, this foot condition is beginning to make it less easy. Anybody else had experience of it? What’s helped?

Ruth

Not me, but OH. He found ice massages helped (we froze small water bottles and he rolled his foot over them), but he did have to have a few weeks with little exercise to give it a chance to recover. Also has custom made inserts. Have you been to a podiatrist?

Thanks for all that advise. Will defo try the ice bottles. Not been to podiatrist as yet. Guy who did ultrasound has referred me back to GP for next step.

I tied my toes to the two on either side with surgical tape. That reduced the movement of the affected toe, which helped a lot. Also had steroid injections. Still pops up from time to time. I very much hope you can find a treatment that will enable you to carry on running.

Hey Ruth, I feel your pain. My RA started in my feet, and I’m a golfer. Actually, I got a mis-diagnosis of Morton’s neuroma - when in actual fact I have plantar plate disruption - you may want to get this checked.

Anyway, I have a fabulous podiatrist who’s fashioned me soft orthotics - which “off-load” the problem areas in my feet. Podiatrist = good investment and the soft orthotics are not horribly expensive. It’s pretty much pain free whilst golfing, it’s afterwards that things can get a bit painful. However, my feet seem to recover with a bit of rest.

I play golf 3x per week, so roughly 24Km in total, plus I like to walk and cycle, hope this helps you, cheers Deb :)

I’ll look into the plantar plate disruption. Thanks for the info.

Hi I also have RA & also diagnosed with Mortons Neuroma have to date 2 painfull injections into the neuroma sadly to no avail next step is an operation which mean (as I've been told by GP) six weeks in a medical boot as we live rural & I need to drive I keep putting it off but have found relief in wearing Sketchers go walk 2s due to their great comfort soles. I unlike you don't run but do walk a fair bit & have tried gel insoles but the best results as I've said is the Sketchers, hopefully they will work for you.

Hope when you do go for the surgery that it’s a great success.

Yes had removed by surgery no real issues and pain free. Only wore the boot for a couple of weeks then back to normal. It helps to wear shoes with small heel and supportive the injections don't always work but really just put off operation. Its a day case and if your in the UK get it done as asap before it goes on the list of not needed by NHS. I had to charge to an automatic car because of pain but liked it so although no pain now I still own one.

Hiya.

I had a Morton’s Neuroma a few years back and eventually decided to go the surgical route. Really pleased with the result - just a tiny bit of numbness underneath. I also run and put off the surgery for a long time because you I didn’t want it to affect my running. In retrospect I wish I had dealt with it earlier as not as bad as I thought and was back to running soon after. Good luck and it’s good to hear from another runner 🏃🏻‍♀️
