I have a ache in my gums....different parts of my mouth.... I were dentures, so I thought it might be a infection in my gums. Went to the dentist yesterday got X-ray done....he checked everything nothing there, everything was fine.
Do you think I could have RA in my mouth/ gums?
Thank you for any help.

Could be entirely unrelated but I had a lot of gum pain when I started methotrexate so they upped my folic acid and it went away.
But if you've been on it a couple of years I don't know if it would suddenly start causing folate problems now. Still probably worth mentioning to rheumatology?
When went for my checkup the dentist was a bit concerned because my gums were very red and they had been aching for a while. I wear dentures too and have had arthritis for many years. He sent me to have X-rays etc and I was told to not sleep wearing my bottom denture because it was possible that I was pressing my jaws together whilst I was sleeping and making it worse, otherwise the X-rays were good, It helped but apparently it does occur when you have arthritis too, I was just aggravating it.
hello stoneferry8, thank you for your reply, I don’t wear my dentures to my bed, it’s bad enough that I have to wear them through the day, without them coming to bed with me.🤣.
The last couple of days I have been putting bonjel on them...that has helped a bit.
Very likely and I note you are on methotrexate. If you read the side effects mouth issues are on the side effects. I have a mouthful of root canal’s from my time on methotrexate and a back tooth gone. Speak to your rheumatologist. I take slow release b vits to keep my mouth in order even now over a decade after stopping methotrexate.
hello everyone..... I read some old post on here about pain in gums...one person was at the dental hospital.....and they told her it’s to do with having RA. We are always learning about this horrible illness.x
I’m back again ....I don’t think it’s my methotrexate... as I have said I’ve been on it for a while..tablets first....then two and a bit years on injections.
There is quite a few people saying it’s to do with having RA.
This probably isn't the same but don't rule out it may be a type of facial pain. I had a mystery pain which I thought was tooth ache. I had a lot of unsuccessful work done on 2 teeth which just made it worse. I was referred to a dental hospital 'facial pain 'department and found out that the pain had nothing to do with the teeth but instead a jaw muscle where the pain had begun and had just not 'switched off'. I have medicine now that counters that pain.
I recently tried methotrexate 7.5 mgs/wk. My gums started bleeding after one week, different areas would bleed then only another area. I also got petechiae, and my physician told me to stop the methotrexate.
Hi - Gum disease is a feature of RA. The dentist should give you a reading - 3 is normal but anything above not normal. You can get a deep clean treatment but beware of the price as quotes vary enormously. I only paid £300 and it returned my gums to a normal reading apart from above one back molar which was four. I was quoted thousands by some dentists so be careful if you try that.
RA factor is in your blood and as blood circulates the body yes it can cause gum problems. Every now and again my dentist does a deep clean. If you have dentures maybe they rub and need checking
