Injection into sacroiliac joint?

Just wondering if anyone had experience of this and if it was useful?

Saw rheumatologist yesterday. After the debacle getting biologicals delivered, and horrendous side effects, we've decided no more meds for me. I'm highly sensitive, and most just wipe out my immune system. Apart from the autoimmune issues, the only time I get sick is when taking rheumatic drugs. So it's a no more thanks from me. Doctor did apologise for the poor communication. Trying to get in touch with rheumatology is like pulling teeth! Anyway, I'm in pain with spine, and sacroiliac joint, plus shoulders. Ive opted to have both injected rather than take systemic meds. I guess we'll see how that goes! Flu season is about to hit, and I want to have a fairly robust immune system rather than one infection after another.

I haven’t but I’m interested to hear any experience of this too as I fear that’s where I’m heading too.

Years ago i had severe sacroiliac pain and could hardly walk, i had a guided injection which was very successful. I have had flare ups since but never as severe and always short lived . If it was bad again I would request another injection.

I hope the pain settles down for you , best wishes.

Thanks for reply. This sounds positive! I'm at least hopeful it will work. Walking is tricky. Exercises help, but this has gone on for too long now.

I do sympathise with your situation regarding meds, in my case nothing seems to have any lasting positive effects.

Hopefully the steroid injections bring you some relief. I fear I'm heading down that road too.

Thank you. Well you know, I gave meds a good go. I'm glad they seem to work for some folks without too many issues. I just can't do it any more. For me personally they just seem to cause more problems than they fix. I'd love to be able to take something and it do the job.

I'm sorry you are having the same problem. I think there's a few of us out there sadly. Ketogenic diet seems to be helpful for me. It's cured the darn migraines, and severe gut issues for sure. It's a bit slower on the arthritis front, but definitely doing something. If I fall off the diet i notice considerable pain. It's a slow process, but I reckon there are no quick fixes (unless very lucky!)

Hey ho. I wish you good luck on your health road.

I'm in the process of changing consultant and hope for one last push on the medication front, otherwise that's it. Prednisolone is my only friend RA wise.

Truly sorry to hear that. I hope you will find something that helps.

I had a conversation with Gillyflower70 about this 3 months ago. If you post ‘denervation’ into the search box it should come up with our posts. Her question was ?to denerve or not to denerve. I have had success with sacroiliac injections and am waiting for Pain Management to do my right side having had left done twice in three years. Good luck!

I’ve had 2 guided injections in my sacroiliac joint, the last on about 30 years ago. Before these the pain was excruciating. I had 2 young children to care for, and my mum had to come and stay to look after them because I couldn’t move comfortably. Since the 2nd injection I have had long periods of pain, but nowhere near as bad as in the 1990s. I hope it works for you.

Thank you. Its darned painful. Can't imagine coping with kids! I had planned a long walk in a couple of weeks. Don't think that's happening!

I’ve had several. The first one worked wonderfully. After that some worked, some didn’t but usually always got some relief. You can not have so many a year. I’ve had so many I’ve become sensitive to them and have to take Benadryl before and after to hold down the reactions. The best results for me was a quad injection into both SI joints and facet joints. They put you under a X-ray and guide the needle to the exact point needed. I ask for conscious sedation because it can be painful and I tend to tense up and when I don’t do that they never seem to work as well. Good luck!
