Air travel with metoject

Am hoping to fly with RyanAir to visit my brother in Spain. Does anyone know if they insist on a doctor's letter, or is it ok if in sealed packet with pharmacy label. Extra cost of a letter more than the flight!

Hiya Gillian. This is from Metoject UK

TRAVEL ADVICE - When flying, Metoject® PENs must always be carried in your hand luggage. If required by the airline, ask your doctor for a letter, or ask them to complete a Metoject® PEN travel certificate, confirming you are on this prescribed medication.

This is from Ryanair

Liquid Medicine - You are allowed to carry liquid medicine as required for your flight. The medicine does not need to fit in the transparent bag but you should have it ready for inspection by airport security help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb/a...

Medical Items On-Board - Items On-board - Passengers are permitted to carry syringes in the aircraft cabin, if they are needed for medical reasons (for example a diabetic passenger). However, passengers should carry a doctor's letter confirming their requirement help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb/a...

I'd still check with Ryanair though. They are apt to make up/amend their own rules as you're probably aware. More is best, even if it's not required prior to flying at least you'll have peace of mind you've done all that is listed as required.

I hope you enjoy your trip. We've put off visiting friends until things ease in their region but I hope you find them less stringent or necessary where you’re heading.

Omitted to add this, it's the travel certificate mentioned in Metoject advice metojectathome.ie/wp-conten...

It is from the Metoject website for Ireland, can’t locate a UK one but can't see how it could differ.

I used this too. Just printed it out and filled it in, took it to surgery and asked them to stamp it - no problem and no charge! M x

I'm glad you used it. Although I didn't think it would matter it wasn't from UK site you confirming it doesn't is helpful. Thanks Marie.

As long as airport security can see it i to inspect….ie don’t seal it up so that all they see is a tightly sealed package you are usually OK…keep it in your hand baggage, and have a copy of your prescription…and do check if the drug you are transporting into a country is allowed…I think most pharmacists in this country have a pretty good idea these days what you can import to Spain!Happy holidays!

I flew a few years ago with mine. Alcura who supply my metojects supplied me with a travel letter, but I was never asked for it.

I have a letter from rheumatology, no charge, but I’ve never been asked for it, I normally take them out at security and put them in the tray.

I have travelled to Spain several times with them and always take it out my hand luggage as “ liquids” I gave never been asked about it as I think they are used to seeing these. I’ve never flown Ryanair though ( always easyJet) and as nomoreheels says … they are a law unto themselves. I think if you scurry your prescription with you that w should be equivalent to a letter .

My Cimzia is supplied by Lloyds Pharmacy Clinical Home Care. If I need a travel letter I simply phone them and they post out a letter valid for a year. So far I haven't ever had to show it, but wouldn't want to take the risk.

I always carry my methotrexate pens and other medication in my hand luggage when flying .. just in case my suitcase gets lost. I originally had a covering letter from my rheumatology team at the hospital which details the medication I am on however I’ve never been challenged or asked for it in 4 years. I recently took my first flight (Jet2) with biologic injections that have to be kept in a small cool bag with ice packs at a certain temp … so I emailed Sciensus and requested a covering letter which they emailed back at no cost. Again no interest when passing through UK and Spanish airports. It’s more common place than we think.

That's good to know as i am also on cosentyx which is supplied by Sciensus, although I won't need to transport that medication on this trip

I suspect the airport security would be ok as long as you have a letter that looks official. Healthcare at Home sent me an electronic version of a letter that updates itself each time I print it out and has been invaluable as I've needed it at airports all over the world when flying with lots of different airlines, including RyanAir, over the last 10+ years. I'm usually challenged at security but that's maybe because I have Enbrel, which also needs to be kept at the right temperature so I carry mine in a cold bag with gel packs and that throws them a bit sometimes until I produce the letter. I was concerned that it may be a problem getting a new letter when HaH changed their name to Sciensus but on request, they sent a new one at no cost. Can't you throw yourself on the mercy of whoever dispenses your metoject?

I am just back from US, three flights and three airlines (Delta, Virgin, and BA). Nobody interested in the Metoject pens. Rheumatology nurse did a letter for me years ago, have never been asked for it (never been asked to show my prescription list including the pens, although I always carry this). Ask rheumatology dept for a letter - they will have a standard template for this and just need to customise it with your details. Miserable state of affairs that GP wants to charge you!!!!!!!!!! Hope you have a safe and enjoyable journey.

Thanks all. Looks like I should be able to get some paperwork without spending on a GP letter 👍
