A new drug to lower cholesterol will be made available to hundreds of thousands of NHS patients, thanks to a world-leading deal announced by the head of the health service today.
The revolutionary new treatment, Inclisiran, is delivered as an injection twice a year and can be used alongside statins, adding to the options available to patients to help control their cholesterol levels.
This first NHS āpopulation health agreementā, announced today and agreed between the NHS and Novartis, will enable 300,000 patients with high cholesterol and a history of cardiovascular disease to benefit from the lifesaving drug over the next three years, a figure that could rise to nearly half a million people beyond that initial period.
Is it just me, or might it be worth spending the same amount of money on preventative health to try to avoid some of these problems in the first place? Maybe by controlling the food industry, and advertising of junk food, and putting more into healthy school meals and cookery classes? Making public sports facilities cheaper/free?
Iām sure itās a fine drug, and for some with genetic problems it will be great, but there seems to be less and less interest in looking after people, and helping them live healthy lives, and more in finding solutions that donāt require any medical time or effort.
You are right about that, I have HEREDITARY Hypercolesterolemia, didn't know I had it until I was 38 and had a heart attack so I wasn't being treated for it.
Iām not knocking research and solutions for these problems. After all Iām benefiting from a hugely expensive biologic drug!
I just wish that the health service were as keen to fund preventative programmes. And then perhaps my RA would never have been triggered in the first place?
Unfortunately anything requiring self discipline is not likely to work in the U.Kā¦.ā¦.look at the obesity & Type 2 Diabetes problems in very young peopleā¦.itās usually not the youngsterās faultā¦but so many parents refuse to believe their children are overweight until itās too late. You only have to watch programmes on overweight children ā¦..95% accompanied by 15 stone 5ā tall mothersā¦..declaring their child is āwell builtā! Before Iām shot down in flamesā¦..yes there are exceptionsā¦but it does seem mainly it is down to refusing to acknowledging there is a problem.
No not at all grumpy, HH, I thought exactly the same as soon as I read this news. Although I thought it could be really good for some people who had tried all kinds of preventative measures but to little avail .. I also thought .. could this be giving some people the green light to eat whatever they liked and to lead an unhealthy lifestyle as they know theyāll get this new med? I must be grumpy too then today! š³š
I still think that is very good news as I know people who have high cholesterol and drugs are not working. So a new injection might be more hopeful for some people . Yes research generally is very slow and I agree preventative would be the overall best.
