For no apparent reason my middle finger suddenly turned purple as if bruised on palm side of my hand, it was also swollen. Does anyone have any idea what it could be. Thank you

Purple finger
Can you remember if you somehow bruised your finger beforehand. I used to get it when pulling the Magimix out of the bottom of the cupboard - I had to drag it from the middle of the shelf and being so heavy, it sometimes used to pull the tendon and cause a bruise on the underside of one of my fingers, which used to hurt like hell. The tendon would swell and the area would go bluish purple for a couple of days and then it would die down.
I think that was one of the first signs of my RD (I may be wrong), it happened when I mowed the grass. My index finger became very bruised /swollen/painful and I was unable to bend it. It lasted about a week.
Hope it resolves itself soon.
I have had purple looking bruises on my knuckles. No pain or knocks. Mtx can cause bruising. It went when dose was lowered.
Thank you for replying J1707...I am on a low dose of its and hydroxychloriquin! Have to wait and see for a couple of days!
When I first had it my fingers would go navy blue. I was put on tablets for it which I didn't like so eventually stopped taking them. This was years ago, and I've not had it since, Check with your rheumatoid team and good luck.
Definitely worth checking with your rheumatology team. I have had the same but it is now happening on my toes same toe on each foot the second time I hadn't stubbed it or anything. Spoke to surgery's nurse and sent a photo she suggested contacting rheumatology so sent an email and photo heard back within half an hour. Got to have bloods this morning and have a rheumatology appointment on of all days Christmas eve. They do take or at least mine have unexplained bruising seriously.
About a year before I was diagnosed I developed an impressive bruise on the fleshy bit below my thumb after a cramp; the cramp was painful but the bruise wasn't. A couple of weeks later, after using the thumb in the same way, the bruise reappeared so I saw the practice nurse. She sent me for blood tests which showed nothing so I forgot about it although I have wondered since if it was RA-related... 🤔
Hello I had exactly the same thing happen to me in 2016 before I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. Consulted my GP and was asked if I had any injury of which I hadn't so mine was also a mystery. My immune system completely broke down and it was obviously put down to this. I am on methotrexate injections now but did have other lotions and potions including steroids for a period of time and these were unsuccessful. I work full time and the injections are keeping my condition under control. 😊
Until I saw your post I completely forgot about my purple finger ! I have osteoarthritis in my lower back and right knee and plantar palmar psoriasis, the latter is why I inject methotrexate but my dose has lowered from 17.5 to 10mg over the past few years. 😉
Hi Trishab It’s worth checking your meds, I have had the odd unexplained bruise here & there, a couple extremely big, it turned out it was steroids as I was just on a quick fix higher dose, i still get the odd one but as I’m bringing down my dose it’s becoming less frequent.. initially I thought it was the biologic I’d just started as this can also be a side affect, so it could of been both but now my body is becoming use to it, so it could well of been the combination of the 2 together, hope you manage to get answers & resolve it, as it is concerning, all the very best..
Thank you for replying Durrell... I have been on my current dose for at least 3years! This is the first time this has happened, hopefully it will go away and not come back! When I have my blood tests next week there could be an answer....otherwise it will remain a mystery!
