05/11/2020 - Exercises that I do since remission

4 years ago, I posted the exercises that I did during my recovery process. I still remember those days, during the peak of my RA, I started to only use a 2 1/2 feet long stick to move my hands up and down. Also, I used to go to children playground to use the equipment there to move my joints. Today, I am doing my regular yoga instead.

I always hope that my success can give some hope to those who are still suffer from the pain. Hope you can do like I do one day. Keep safe always!

As I said, I started with using a 2 1/2 feet long stick to move my hands up and down. Because of my consistency, many months down the road, my hands able to move up a little. I am sure you can after a few months time. Exercises help but it takes a long time to see the result.

That's so inspiring - thank you! 🙏

I've never been that supple and never expect to be but it's so encouraging to see what the right medication and exercise regime can do; I love your "biog" and it's so good to read of someone who's worked with their rheumy to get so far 👌

Yes, work with my rheumy, occupational therapist and physiotherapist are the keys to put me back to my normal life.

Don’t give up, just like what I did, a small step at a time but do it consistently, you will improve.

I have four levels of yoga practice developed with a yoga teacher who specialised in helping people with various disabilities to continue practising. Sometimes I can only do the breathing exercises and not much else, but usually I can do more and have been doing daily practice now for forty years...

I couldn’t also before my RA was under control. However, I was doing some other simple exercises where I could handle the pain. When I stronger, I would try to see if I could do any yoga step, very disappointed to know that the pain deter me from doing any. Few months before my remission, I didn’t have any pain anymore, I was ok to go back to yoga slowly one step at a time.

Just do when you can. But must maintain the daily exercises in whatever form. Say some days you are in pain then just go out to walk. Consistency make a lot of difference to me.

Amy,

I remember we were diagnosed about the same time. My RA diagnosis is somewhat questioned now (at any rate, not treated if in fact I do have it) but my newly and correctly diagnosed Stiff Person Syndrome requires the same- daily, consistent movement or I will lose ability. This disease plays for keeps. It is very hard to get it back.

I was happy to see in your pictures that I can do quite a few (thanks to my PT) and continue to work on more everyday. On the difficult days, I do more easy movements and practice meditation 🧘‍♀️ and visually seeing myself moving in those more difficult positions until it becomes reality.

I am so sorry about situation. Since you think you have it, why not change another rheumy to get to the bottom as delay will cause more damaged to your joints.

I still remember those painful days and I am glad that they are over. However I still can feel the sensation in my joints when the weather change. But without pain mean I can have my normal life back.

As for exercise, do until the level of pain you can tolerate. Consistency is the key to build your flexibility. Don’t force yourself too much into it if you still can’t. Just go with the simple posts that you can handle first, slowly you will see miracle happen.

I don’t come in as often now as I can see a lot more experience people to provide good advices here. However I do like to update once in a while to send some positive wave to those who are still in pain.

I hope you can get to the bottom of your problem soon. Do message me if you need to.

I do yoga regularly but admit to being disheartened at times when it flares and I cannot even go on all fours or raise one arm. I keep going hoping one day it will be under control to be able to perform the poses I once found so enjoyable

I can certainly understand your pain. I started to only use a 2 1/2 feet long stick to move my hands up and down. Children playground was my regular place for me to exercise my hands. Now I can do my daily yoga without any problem.

Don’t force yourself. During bad day just do some simple movement to move your joints will do. Get back when you are about to after that. Consistency is the key and exercise take a long time to see result also.

I am being very lucky to be treated early hence into remission after a year and a half treatment. I can see not all are so lucky, therefore just work closely with your rheumy and don’t skip any medicines.

Something to aspire too. Surely you must have been doing these exercises or similar before you got RA. I exercise every day, Tai Chi, Qigong, strength and mobility and I enjoy doing it.

Yes, I had been in the yoga classes for a few years before I was diagnosed RA. Then when RA hit me, I basically couldn’t move my hands and legs much. Therefore my rheumy sent me to the occupational therapist to train my fingers and my hands. The training process was so painful. I had to learn how to open and close the normal clips up and down, the clips were used for our clothes. I couldn’t even press it open, the hopeless feeling I could recall.

Now I don’t go to yoga Center anymore. When I tried to get back to yoga, I felt so time consuming to drive to a Center. I could actually use the time for my exercise. Since I couldn’t do any, I tried a step at a time. Now I only do it at home and on the yoga classes from YouTube if I want to. Very convenience to do it at home.

You have good exercises for yourself too. Tai Chi and Qi Gong are low impact exercises which are indeed very good for us. I am glad you enjoy them.
