Vitamins/Minerals/Supplements for HAIR LOSS

Anyone know of any substances to help thicken hair. I inject 20mg of Methotrexate once a week and take 5mg of folic acid 6 days a week. My hair has become baby fine and very thin. Can you recommend anything to help PLEASE I am getting quite desperate.

Hi Franfoto - I think Williby answered this question on your last post about hair? She had several good ideas because she used to be a hairdresser. TTx

Yes just checked and if you look at your last question on this matter she said "The best Shampoo range I've ever come across is by Matrix called Fortifying Shampoo and Conditioner, I've seen some amazing results with broken fragile hair using this product, you can only get it from a salon who stock Matrix, expensive but of a superior quality and will last twice as long. (used to be a hairdresser)" - hope this helps. TTx

Thanks Tilda, Yes I did make a note of the products that Williby suggested and and am currently sourcing this Matrix range to use myself. I heard that there are supplements that can be taken other than folic acid, I believe one is called VIVISCAL and I wondered if anyone on this site had ever tried them or any other vitamin/supplement that helped with this problem. I have a leaflet on it but you know how advertising can be so misleading, it does sound the business though. Fran x

Just a thought but your hair loss might not all be down to the Methotrexate Fran. I've had total alopecia twice in my life - once as a kid and once after having my third child and I'm pretty sure both episodes were because of hormonal changes in me. Good luck with the vitamin suppliments - might be worth looking into the hormonal links and see if monopausal sites and those places can make recommendations too?TTx

Have good offers on Matrix- free delivery some times or buy one get one free.

Have a look on there website.

Or if you have a Homebargains shop near you - why not look for the shampoos in there, they sometimes have Lifetex thinning shampoos and treatments which are £1.99 these are also stocked by Hairsalons for silly prices

I once read Borage liquid and daily doses of Folic acid were suppose to help- have not tried it myself but its worth a shot.

I wish you luck - this is the reason I quit the Methatrexate- but wish I could have tolerated it, it did its job.

Good luck Caroline xx

Hi Caroline,

Thanks for commenting on this, such a co-incidence....I had delivery of Matrix strengthening shampoo only today so look forward to trying that. Not such a good deal as the company you suggest so will try them next time.

I agree with you regarding MTX doing a good job, I was so much worse before taking it and wouldn't want to go through all that again now that my RA is under control. The hair thing is unfortunate but I have got added hair, wigs and hair pieces for when I want to look my best and one has to accept compromises I suppose. I think part of my problem may be what TildaT suggests as well as the MTX and unfortunately my GP is not keen on prescribing HTR for me any more so took me off it about 3 years ago. It's good to be able to talk to people with similar problems on this site and thank you all for your help and advice, I really do appreciate it.
