Does anyone else have this? What is it?? I've had this for about a year but it is becoming more noticeable...
Bulging veins??: Does anyone else have this? What is it... - NRAS
Bulging veins??
I think that it happens when you lose connective tissue supporting the area and the veins become much more visible. If there has been swelling in the area and that goes down the veins become obvious.
It also happens with the aging process as I have noticed!
Hi Brychni. My veins swell although not as bad as yours. I pointed it out to my rheumy doctor in December as it seems to happen when my wrists and thumbs are playing up but when they're OK, they go down again, he listened and agreed that they look rather large but didn't make any suggestions add to why it happens.
It’s age Brychni...happens to us all!
as my eldest son has started saying
"really , Mother, anyone would think you're a daft middle aged woman!"
when I'm being 'vague' - another symptom of being old 🤣
Oh wait until you get ther e Brychni......most of us crumblies could write a book about what to expect from from old age...middle age is a breeze in comparison!
But I guess it’s preferable to the alternative! 👩🦯👩🦯👩🦯
Being “vague” if you’ve got RA goes with the general fatigue feelings. Made sense to me when I learnt that recently. Age might make it worse, except you’re far from being old. My brain is definitely foggy when I am tired......which applies to everyone whether they’ve got RA or not.
Yes enlarged veins or more prominent have been a feature of RD for me. Hands, arms, legs and elsewhere too, in the left leg especially. I now have very noticeable varicose and spider veins but only in the left leg. When in a flare the veins become far more enlarged than 'normal' so much so it's like an 'early warning'
I've noticed that I have loads of spider veins above my knees and partway up my legs these last few months that I didn't used to have.
My veins bulge when it's hot - in my forearms and my thighs - mentioned it to the consultant but he didn't say much. When it's cooler it's less noticeable!
I’ve got that just below my worst knee. Definitely a connective tissue thing for me... it’s the knee where ligaments tore damaged when I fell.
yes - I have connective tissue issues and so do my children, sadly. I don't have a diagnosis but the veins thing is in my family and we all have the rolling ankles my 11 yr old daughter particularly bad. She and her brother (15) are both being investigated for something with a geneticist. My son has varicose veins - very sad. He's very active though and he can have them removed when he is old enough. the underlying cause is the worry as there could be issues with their hearts. He gets horrendous nose bleeds too. He says he feels a pressure while he is sleeping and then it just pumps out and doesn't stop.
Oh I am sorry to read that. 😔 Not good for them at all. Big gentle hugs
I have read that people with hypermobility are at greater risk of RA. My eldest son has Viking's disease which my grandmother had and she had several fingers removed all the way down to the wrist on both hands. Thankfully his can be operated on if it becomes necessary but at the moment it's OK but looks very strange. It looks like hard strings on his palms. we're a right mess, aren't we??!! 😂🤣
Forgot to mention the blood cancers and disorders that my Dad and his mother also had!! I think I'll shoot myself now - no I'll go for a run. 🏃♀️🏃♀️
So sorry to hear of you and your family's troubles. Let's hope a cause and treatment can be found soon
Thanks Gnarli - it doesn't really interfere with every day life and they are both really active but I worry for the future. My daughter is so slim and straight that I wonder how she will cope with pregnancy, tiny little hips and quite severe hypermobility. I think they are looking at Ehler's Dahnlos. I know there is no treatment exactly which is why I am always banging on about exercise. Thankfully she is a dancer and my son plays academy football.
I have really thin arms and noticible veins. Some of mine is muscle wastage but I have very thin skin and get purple bruises at the slightest knock or bump.
Well Brychni. Found your thread very interesting. I didn't know about the hypermobility connection with RA. Not that I have hypermobility or anything like but when I was young I could do the splits and bend crabs and was quite athletic- sports, swimming, ice skating etc. Alas no more ☹️
And me!! Although I never dislocated anything but my daughter has been told that her shoulders are loose and she should avoid anything bendy! She used to do gymnastics but thankfully went off it and the consultant and podiatrist were both happy that she had moved on. Dancing is good for the muscles in the feet.
I used to do a bit of ballet and tap but most of my dancing was the disco kind. 😀. However, I sometimes wonder whether the balls of my feet got a bit too much bashing about with the Northern Soul type of dancing I did when in my teens when I was a mad dancing fool.😒
Yip, got the bulging veins and loss of connective tissue too.
I have this too, also on my left hand a definite dip down from my little finger, any slight knock and a bruise appears on both hands. I also have a large ganglion on my left hand, has been drained operated on, bashed and drained but still it grows back. I so sorry to hear of your family problems and wish you all the very best. X
I've got the dip by my little fingers too. What joy! 😒
Thank you Gigi - I'm pretty sure that they will be ok but might have to be mindful of staying healthy, not smoking, drinking etc and making sure they keep their hearts healthy. I tell them as little as possible and they don't know about the heart bit.
I’m still waiting for my first referral hospital appointment for RA. But I have noticed during the heat we’ve had that the vein running from my ankle half way up to my knee in my left leg, got very prominent! I was a bit worried as I’d never had that before in my life, now it’s cooler it’s gone down again. It’s comforting.... in a way, to know others have this happen too.
Hi. I feel your pain. I am on steroids for PMA. Recently I have noticed my hands turn into something out of a horror movie. The veins are really prominent and ugly. I also have a low TSH. I am 60.
